"Mark Hackley and Jeff Todd Perform, Educate"

Carilion Clinic hosted an educational and entertaining program featuring singer / songwriter Mark Hackley (pictured on left) last week. Hackley suffered a pulmonary embolism in June 2006 when he was only 45 years old. In addition to performing, Hackley travels and speaks about his experience in order to educate others about signs, symptoms, and ways to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can result in a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism.

Accompanying Hackley was Dr. Jeffrey Todd, Carilion Clinic cardiologist, who is also a jazz guitarist, and Deborah Liles, a well-known vocalist in the Roanoke area. Dr. Todd added to Hackley’s comments, educating listeners on the dangers of DVT. Hackley, whose personable demeanor lent itself to the informal atmosphere said, “I want people to know you don’t have to be that old to suffer a serious blood clot.” He added that the experience “gave me an appreciation for life [knowing] that it could end at any time.”

Bio

Mark Hackley began playing the guitar at age 9. Born in suburban Maryland, Mark grew up in the 1960's and 70's between the big cities of Baltimore and Washington, DC and the farms of eastern and western Maryland. After two years of guitar lessons and 6 months of piano training, he taught himself to become comfortable with the guitar and also became quite good on the piano.

Mark wrote his first song, entitled “Which Way Will You Choose” at about age 15, and went on to write another 50 tunes by age 20. Mark’s music career was put on hold until the summer of 2001, when he began playing at Mossy Creek Café, a local bar in Fishersville, VA. Since then, Mark has become a regular evening and week-end performing artist- and most recently- a recording artist. In 2003, Mark appeared on the live radio show from the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol, Tennessee. He performs for corporate events, parties and weddings in the Virginia, DC, Maryland, North Carolina, and West Virginia area.

In 2004, Mark produced his first album called “Family Man In Crisis” with Robby Meadows of Stanley, VA. The album was published by Lonesome Dog Publishing, BMI, and is available on-line and in select retailers. From the album, MBC Communications at Mary Baldwin College produced a music video of Mark’s song, Love On Me. The video is on Mark’s website and MySpace page.

With an array of talented studio musicians including the works of notable Nashville guitarist, Bryan Sutton, Mark’s first album considers the challenges of a traveler away from his family. The ballads on the album reflect emotions of extreme loneliness, and a unique Mark Hackley sense of humor. The recording is full of upbeat instrumentals featuring acoustic and electric guitar, steel guitar, fiddle and piano. If you like country music, you’ll find the variety and quality of songs on Mark’s first project worth the cost of the CD.

The most popular songs for radio play and internet downloads are “How About You” and “Ballad of a Traveling Salesman”.

Mark’s second release “Hurricane” is now available. Mark can be booked for shows from his website.
