"Mark Nelson - Stroking the keys of success"

Music is considered to be like a spirit, devoid of a physical image. The people who make it have a look, though. Judging from one's dress or demeanor, it's easy (sometimes) to tell if someone is going to rap or sing. Sometimes we even predict how good the performance will be, based on their clothing. However, when someone goes on stage with an instrument, image takes a back seat.
When Mark Nelson approached the keyboard awaiting him on stage at the Absolut Jamz R&B Talent Search we all knew what he was going to do, or at least we thought we did. Before he stroked a key he told the audience to sit back and relax as he was going to sing an original composition. Patrons already began to anticipate a strong church like voice to emit from the stocky, sable-skinned brother. However when he opened his mouth something completely different came out. A cappuccino-smooth voice floated from the speakers leaving the faces of the women in the audience blanched with shock. This guy wasn't supposed to sound like that.
Nelson went on to win the competition...Nelson originally from Toronto, Canada has been writing his own songs for years. However after hearing him sing everyone walks away saying the same thing. "This brother sounds like Brian McKnight."
Even though he has heard the comment umpteen times, he says he doesn't mind. "I never get tired of it because it's such a compliment to me", he says, "It's such an honor to be compared to someone like him. I aspire to be like him."
When he says he aspires to be like him, he means it in the context of being a great musician. "I think stylistically I'm like him, but I don't think the literal sound of my voice sounds like [his]," says Nelson.
Don't expect Nelson to build his career trying to distinguish himself from his idol, he has too much talent to waste time doing that. Rather, Nelson will be focusing on writing heartfelt songs like the ones he performed at the R&B talent search he won. "I just try to stay true to what my experiences have been," says Nelson. "that's what creates the force behind what I do."...

"Absolut-ly Over"

Well, it has finally come to a close and we have our Grand Prize winner for the ABSOLUT Jams R&B Talent Search. I would like to congratulate Mark Nelson on his convincing win in a very close contest featuring some of the best performers in the Southeast region. Again, I am glad it wasn't me judging because the competition was pretty fierce...There were many others who did well, but Mark Nelson, solely on stage accompanying himself on the keys, delivered a beautiful ballad that had the ladies yelling and even the men clapping in recognition; his style is reminiscent of Brian McKnight, but his songs definitely have that "classic hit" value to them... - www.atlantahapps.com

Bio

A native of Toronto, Ontario Canada, Mark began his musical journey as a 5 year-old just trying to be like his big brother who played piano and sang (deceased, 1988), but as he grew older, he began to develop a love for music all his own. In the early stages of his musical career, Mark formed a Youth choir, began a gospel group that sang around the Metropolitan Toronto Area and sang with gospel recording artist Sharon Riley & Faith Chorale. During his late teens he began to explore other genres of music, and fueled by the ups and downs of his relationships, he began to express his feelings about love through songwriting. Mark has performed across North America at Jazz Festivals and concerts from the du Maurier Jazz Festival to the World famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. He has also been featured at some of the premiere venues in the Southeast Region including: "For Sister's Only" at the Georgia World Congress Center; "Passion & Poetry" as a featured artist along with HBO Def Poets at Lithonia Amphitheater and Earthlink Live; featured artist in "Harmony in Life" at the Hard Rock Cafe's Velvet Underground. He has won numerous talent showcases, most notably the 2003 winner of the Absolut Jams R&B competition, where his songwriting and musicianship separated him from the competition. Mark has been recognized in national print magazines and online magazines such as Rolling Out Magazine and Atlantahapps.com respectively, and is currently finishing his debut solo album to be released on, LoveChild Entertainment, LLC, of which he is the Founder and President.
