Rootsy pop with country flavor! Markowski sounds like Ryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, kd lang and Jeff Buckley meeting in a funky coffeehouse on a Sunday evening, having conversations about yesterday, tomorrow and everything in between. Singer/songwriter Sonja Markowski + her 3 favorite guys

Biography

“Close your eyes and she is singing just for you. When it’s cold outside, Markowski is not the electric heating, but the crackling fireplace that keeps you warm.” (3voor12, review EP-release concert)

What happens if a singer/songwriter from the inspiring town Berlin (Germany) moves to Holland and loses her heart to Americana? Right…she starts writing her own rootsy popsongs about wicked things in life that grown up people are supposed to understand, but actually don't. Most lyrics are in English, some are in German, which turns out to work great with that kind of music!

Sonja Markowski whispers softly, sings with the strong, expressive voice of a rock chick. She touches your heart, effortless. Her honest lyrics paint pictures you will definitely remember. Her songs sound too rootsy to fit in the pop section, too young to be traditional folk, too soft to be rock’n’roll and too wicked to be country music. Actually, it’s all of this, but still different.

Ten years ago she met her musical soul mate Jan van Bijnen. He's got exactly what her songs need: the edgy singing of a Dobro, a crispy guitar, a dreamy pedal steel, a tender mandolin and the lonely sound of a banjo. He adds some country flavor to the songs, without going too much ‘yeehaw’.

Both played together as professional musicians in different bands for years. But it's only four years ago that Sonja decided to really follow her heart. That's when Markowski started to perform on a regular base. Not only in Holland (clubs, festivals, live radio/tv performances) but also in Germany, USA and Belgium.

“With her clear, extraordinary expressive voice she lifts the songs up to a level some famous American artists can only dream of. Interesting enough to keep a close watch on this promising talent.” (ctraltcountry.be)

"This is songwriting like it should be! Awesome. The singer is as good as her musicians, the whole performance is very strong. Markowski is a complete singer/songwriter. Everything is on a high level. The combination of the songs, the performance and her strong personality make it very special." (jury Grand Prize South Holland...Markowski won :-) )

Lyrics

Buy Me A Ticket

Written By: Sonja Markowski

Excuse me sir, can you tell me where I am
I guess I feel asleep, when I just
opened my eyes I did not recognize
This station

Have I been here before or is this just
a metaphore, for every place I
should have been, but never went
You don’t look like you understand

Buy me a ticket
Buy me a ticket
One way to you
Buy me a ticket
Get me on that train
One way to you

A field of daisies, a big oak tree
A waterfall of memories
The wind keeps singing the
same old song

people passing, smiling at me
an umbrella for the rain
warm sweater for the winter
a candy for the sadness
a caress for lonelyness

they don’t look like they understand

Buy me a ticket…

Never close enough to you
Never close enough to you

Buy me a ticket…

Catch Me

Written By: Markowski

Paint me a picture
not square, but round
In the most beautiful colours
Paint it for me

I like the westwind
He brings the sun
He lifts me up
Catch it for me

nothing’s ever good enough
To catch my love
Every word you ever said
Is gone, gone, gone
never running fast enough
to get my love

love, love, love…

what am I doing to you?
You know I’m craving for love
But my heart’s still playing cool

sing me a song
a song in major
a sweet melody
compose it for me

come and catch me, I’m the wind
Never know where I am blowing
Come and get me if you can
My hands cover my face, I disappear

nothing’s ever good enough
To catch my love
Every word you ever said
Is gone, gone, gone
never running fast enough
to get my love

love, love, love…

what am I doing to you?
what am I doing to you?

You know I’m craving for love
But my heart’s still playing cool

Dear Mr.Ray

Written By: Sonja Markowski

Dear mr. Ray, I guess you don’t know me, but I saw you walking in the park
It was on a Tuesday, a quarter to 7, the trees almost swallowed by the dark
The sound of the city brushed away by children’s laughter
While I was rushing home you caught my eye, so I stood still

You were wearing that raincoat, although it stopped raining almost two days ago
The old bag you carried must be from the seventies, you were hummin’ a song I didn’t know
I had to grin when you said hi to the pigeons; I bet you gave’em all names
while you were shuffling your feet I couldn’t leave, so I just stood and watched you
caress the roses

those eyes ever looked at someone they loved
those hands caressed a cheek
I was watching my life passing by
And never felt so weak

‘It’s been a long time’, I heard you say, ‘and I miss you every day.
This used to be our place and it will be forever. I know, I told you before…
Yes, I fed the parrot, he keeps saying your name. No, I still don’t know how to dance.
But one day when it’s time to go, I’ll dance with you ‘til dawn…’

those eyes ever looked at someone they loved
those hands caressed a cheek
I was watching my life passing by
And never felt so weak

Dear Mr.Ray, I hope that you don’t mind I’m writing this letter to you
Just wanted to thank for stopping my rushing and I’m sure that the roses will keep blooming for you
