"Mars and Venus Doing Good at Home and Abroad"

2011 has been a crazy busy year for Edmonton post-hardcore rockers, Mars and Venus. In addition having released their debut full-length, Faded Maps And Winding Ways, this past February, the band has been a nonstop touring machine playing all over the U.S. and Canada and even right down into Mexico.

“Our original guitar player (Alex Cuervo) is actually from Mexico City,” explains singer Carlos Calleja. “So, a couple of days after we recorded out first EP (2009’s Stray Bullets Make Brave Hearts), we went down and toured around Mexico and it was great.”

Even after the departure of Cuervo (which led to then-drummer Nathan Lafrance taking over the guitar position and bringing in a slew of different drummers before Jordan Tworek joined the group as a permanent member) shortly after the first Mexican tour, requests for the band to head back down south kept coming in and the band couldn’t resist accepting.

“Most of our fans are actually in Mexico,” furthers bassist Matt Bourgeault. “We got the call and it was like, ‘OK, let’s set it up. It’s February, why not?’ And we were off.”

Two weeks after the release of Faded Maps And Winding Ways, Mars and Venus were back on the road for their second tour of Mexico. On this tour, the band befriended Mexican rockers Zebra Circus and, in particular, their frontman, Hugo Mondragon, who set up the band with a free place to sleep while they toured two countries away from home.

“(Mondragon) was amazing to us. He let us sleep at his place and his grandma made sure we were fed,” Calleja reminisces about the band’s good friend. “It was a completely selfless gesture and that’s why this benefit show for him coming up is so important to us.”

Mondragon was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that will quickly leave him blind unless he can afford the surgery. In Mexico, the procedure will cost him C$3,800, which would take Mondragon two years to raise on his own.

“He’s only 23 years old and he has so much going for him,” Calleja emphasizes. “He’s an amazing performer, an amazing musician and he has an engineering degree. This benefit show could literally change his life for him.”

The benefit show will take place on October 7 at Edmonton’s Avenue theatre with fellow local rockers Bomb Squad Rookies, Nobody Likes Dwight, and Red Deer, Alta.’s Dusty Tucker. All proceeds from the show will go directly to a fund to assist Mondragon in paying for his surgery. “Everyone really pulled together for this show,” Bourgeault continues. “All the bands on it are amazing, it’s for a great cause, it’s our first show back since July, and it’s Craig (Sartor)’s first local show with us.”

After the departure of second guitarist Miller Fernandes, the band recruited Sartor to fill in the void.

“I sent Craig (Sartor) the guitar parts and he came to practice knowing them and playing them perfect,” explains Lafrance. “He was just a perfect fit.”

“Not just musically, but as a person too,” Bourgeault adds in. “He came to the first practice with a six-pack and I knew he was the guy for the job. It was like instant friend. He just fits in perfect with us.”

Sartor played his first three shows, in the first three weeks that he was in the band, in a perfect and seamless transition.
“These guys are like already my best friends,” Sartor says with a smile. “At first, I was worried about the commitment. I have a full time career that I was worried about losing. But now, it doesn’t even matter. I know that this is what I want to do and these are the guys I want to do it with.” - Beatroute Magazine: Chris Schieman

Mars & Venus isn’t just the name of one of Whyte Avenue’s most popular clothing stores. It’s also the name of a bunch of local rockers fronted by Los Pipes and backed by a dinosaur, T Wreck, according to the band’s MySpace page. Mars & Venus will release their full-length debut, Faded Maps and Winding Ways, on Friday, Feb. 25 at The Starlite Room. (Tickets are on the verge of selling out.) Then, they’ll be using a few maps and ways as they drive through western Canada, America, and Mexico as part of their 11-week White Pinata tour. - Edmonton Journal

"10 Questions with Mars and Venus"

10 QUESTIONS WITH: Mars & Venus

1. Who are you and where can people find out more about you and your band?
We are Mars & Venus, an ?inter-core? band from Edmonton, Alberta. Its hard to stick us into a specific genre, we play music that we like to play. You can find us on http://www.facebook.com/MarsandVenus , www.myspace.com/marsandvenusmusic, and www.marsandvenus.ca should be up very soon.

2. Who are your biggest influences?
Carlos - In life it's my mom and my brother, musically bands such as Thrice and Rancid have had the biggest impact on me both for their music and just what they've done for me on a personal level in my life. I quite literally love all types of different music though, gotta listen to everything you know, you never know what you'll like till you listen.
Whitey - Moneen and my friends and bandmates
Jordan ? We have a huge range of influences from bands like Led Zep and Aerosmith, to bands like Avenged Sevenfold, He is Legend, Blink 182, and John Mayer. We all kind of have our own tastes, and that?s what I think makes us unique.

3. If you could have anyone in your band, who would it be?
Nathan - Probably Dave Grohl, to replace each one of us and make a whole new band.
Miller - I'd love to jam with Arif from Protest the Hero
Whitey - Willy Nelson & Rodney Dangerfield... to do onstage banter for us while we cried laughing

4. What is the largest and smallest crowd you`ve played in front of?
Jordan ? this past year we sold out the pawn shop in Edmonton, probably around 200 or so. But this past year we have also played a few shows to just the other bands and theyre girlfriends. Not the biggest crowds, but they always turn out to be super fun shows.

5. What signed band should get dropped so that you can get a record deal and why?
Miller - Justin Beiber. I'm sure he's a good kid, but he should just quit while he's ahead. Maybe stick to skateboarding.
Nathan - Any artist with heavy use of auto-tune as a cool feature to their singing. I will not name any names.
Jordan ? It?s a shame to see so many artists that sound like robots or sound the same doing so well, when there are a million other artists dedicated to theyre craft, making great original music without the help of a computer, and going nowhere with it.

6. If you had to live on either Mars or Venus, which would you choose and why?
Whitey - Mars during the summer months at the south pole... I hear it's a balmy 27 celcius that time of year
Jordan ? Venus. More women. Nuff said.
Miller - Mars. Just cause Miller from Mars has a nice ring to it.

7. What should people expect when coming to a Mars & Venus show?
Carlos - So much fun!! Plain and simple you will have a good time, laugh pretty hard, and want to sing along. please buy a shirt!!
Jordan ? We love getting the crowd involved, we are not a band that you just stand silently and watch.

8. What?s next for Mars & Venus?
Carlos - We are currently recording our first full length album at Beta Sound Studios with big Kevin Hoskin of Portal. Then we've got the CD release and touring as much as we can. Seriously though buy a shirt...
Whitey ? Were hoping for the album to be released at the end of February, followed up with a tour of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. If all goes well, we may even make it to Japan late in the year.

9. If your band could tour with any 3 bands, who would it be and why?
Nathan - I would tour with Gallows, Bayside and Nofx. New Found Glory is a close fourth because they look like they have so much fun!!
Miller - Avenged Sevenfold, Strung out, Thrice. They are just simply awesome bands that I have learned alot from.
Carlos - I agree with Miller. Thrice because they're my favorite band ever, Strung Out cause I freaking love them, and Gaslight Anthem cause man are they pretty damn good.

10. What advice would you give a new band starting out?
Work hard. Do everything yourself and do it for you and no one else. Be honest about your music, make sure it's what you as a band want as your voice. Don't worry about writing to please others, please the band first. Keep it enjoyable, and everything else will fall into place. - Oddball Productions
