Ao mesmo tempo que iniciava a licenciatura em Engenharia Civil, a convidada deste Bairro Alto começou, aos 18 anos, a dedilhar os primeiros acordes numa guitarra portuguesa. Até aí era o piano o seu companheiro na música, mas acabou por se render ao fado e ao trinar das cordas. Hoje é das poucas mulheres a tocar guitarra portuguesa e talvez a única no mundo a acompanhar fado. 2012 tem sido o ano de afirmação para Marta Pereira da Costa. Marta Pereira da Costa is the worlds first and only professional Portuguese Guitar female player in Fado.
She started playing the Piano ate the age of 4, later at 8 learnt the classical guitar and at 18 began to study the Portuguese Guitar through the hand of Carlos Goncalves, one of the most important Amalia Rodrigues guitarists.
Marta had the opportunity to play with names like Mariza, Caman and Carlos do Carmo in several occasions. She became a member of Mario Pachecos musical group, having participated in many concerts in Portugal and abroad, mainly after the recording of his album Clube de Fado a Msica e a Guitarra, acclaimed by Songlines magazine as the best of World Music in 2005. In 2008, invited by the famous compositor and Spanish producer Jaime Roldn, she recorded Pasa in Unidad de Canciones Intensivas. In 2012 Marta recorded the Portuguese Guitar for Rodrigos Fados de Amor, the first album in the history of Fado where the Portuguese Guitar is solely played by a woman, recently awarded Best Fado Album of 2012 by the prestigious Amlia Rodrigues Foundation.
2012 was also the year that Marta decided to
abandon her work as a civil engineer in order to pursue her professional career
as a Portuguese guitar player. In March that year she gave her first solo
concert in Toronto, where she returned one year later. Then, in June, she
performed at the Portuguese Embassy in Ljubljana (Slovenia), where she returned
in October. Later, also in June, included in the program of the Festas de
Lisboa, she presented her first self-titled performance in Lisbon. In the same
month, she performed in Madrid (Spain) at Teatros del Canal for the II Fado Festival
and returned last year for the III Fado Festival as a special guest for star
guitarist Jos Manuel Neto. Then, in July, she and Rodrigo performed together in
Lisbon at a fully booked CCB for the debut concert of the tour Fados de Amor.
In 2013 she and her husband were invited to
be part of Talented People, a fashion campaign for the prestigious Spanish
brand Cortefiel. They have staged a major concert at Lisbons Tivoli theatre in
June and were widely applauded and praised by a fully booked theatre. In April
Marta was one of the guest stars at Radio Alfas Fado Gala, in Paris (France). In
June, with Rodrigo, she played in So Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Later,
between October and November, they both toured around the East Coast of the
USA, performing in 10 different venues like the mythical Johnny Ds in Boston
and the Drom in New York. Besides the concerts, they also did several workshops
on Fado music at Universities and High Schools.
This
year, Marta has already performed in Switzerland and in Israel, at Tel Aviv's
Felicja Blumental Music Festival. She has also organized a fund-raising show at a fully-booked
Boa Nova Auditorium, in Estoril, before an enthusiastic audience.
Marta has been preparing her first solo album, which
will include some of her own compositions, to be launched in 2014. Shes also
preparing her first major concert in Lisbon, which will take place also in 2014.
