"Wild Harp & Winged Heart"

?Wild Harp & Winged Heart
By Jane A. Marlowe

On Monday evening, March 12, a talented musician presented a unique and inspiring evening of original music on a beautiful Celtic harp. Martha Gallagher charmed her audience with inspired melodies and lyrics offering glimpses into her childhood and family life. Her grandmother’s advice, very apropos in these financially straitened times, is blended with the wisdom of Deepak Chopra and the Latin rhythm of Santana. “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!”
Martha has performed throughout the United States and Canada for 35 years. She has performed as a classical flautist in a symphony orchestra, played with the Chieftans and has appeared on television and radio. She has vacationed on Marco Island for many years and was pleased to be invited to perform at San Marco Church.
A charming song, Part of My Heart, was written for her daughter, Meaghan, who was present at Monday’s concert along with Martha’s father and other family members. The concert was a benefit on behalf of The San Marco Catholic Youth Group planned by Kim Adamson, San Marco Director of Religious Education.
The Water is Wide is a musical commentary on the flooding caused by Hurricane Irene in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, where Martha makes her home. Martha’s home was heavily damaged by the floods as was her little town. She composed the music to benefit flood relief in the area. All work on creating the CD was donated by the company which has produced Martha’s many other works. To date more than $14,000 has been raised through the sale of this soothing, quiet musical collection.
Moon Shining Brightly and The Wonders of this World concluded the evening. Martha’s range took her through traditional folk music to blues, foot tapping jazz and a lively country music tribute to amazing, smashing, fab, new boots!
Kim shared her thoughts after the concert. “Martha performed a fantastic concert and I plan to invite her again to perform in concert. ”
Remember the name, Martha Gallagher. She has a distinctive talent and when she returns it will be to a standing room only audience.

Martha's power of performance, diversity of music, and obvious joy in what she shares with the audience is tangible; wonderful!  Sarah Craig, Director, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, NY

Martha Gallagher is an enigma that defies pigeon-holes.  Her "beyond concert" one-woman shows weave together songs and stories of life, sprinkled with in-the-moment inspirations.  Her original songs glide in the blink of an eye from wailing blues to Latin grooves to Classical inspirations, from swingin' Jazz to vibrant contemporary Folk.  Her voice is chameleon-like, ranging from smokin' hot to achingly tender, and all that's in between.  Add to that the unusual twist that her instrument of choice is not the expected guitar, but the HARP, bold and beautiful.  And not just any harp; Marthas  one-of-a kind Orphan Harp, named Hope, must be seen and heard!

Martha Gallagher has been sharing her distinctive and richly varied performances with audiences for over 30 years.  She has a diverse musical background; from classical flautist in a symphony orchestra to lead singer in rock and jazz/blues bands.  Martha has performed with such luminaries as six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains.  The 2007 premiere of her innovative original work featuring Celtic harp, vocals and taiko drums marked a worlds first of this performance configuration.  Marthas extensive solo tours have taken her around the US and Canada, with several tours sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts. She has been featured on numerous television and radio programs; appearances include BBC Television, Northeast Public Radio, North Country Public Radio and Good Morning Arizona.  She has been a guest performer many times over the years on folk greats Jay Ungar and Molly Masons popular radio program, Dancing on the Air.

Martha is a popular featured guest performer and workshop leader at international festivals and conferences.  Offstage she has been a guest artist/clinician at The Berklee College of MusicThe Boston Conservatory and has done many educational residencies for students of all ages.  Her theatre training includes working with Avner the Eccentric, mime-dance artist Karen Montanaro, The Celebration Barn and Shakespeare & Co.  Her articles and music been published in a variety of trade magazines and she is the CD reviewer for the International Folk Harp Journal.

Martha has collaborated with a variety of ensembles, arranging and performing many of her original works with symphonies, vocal ensembles, hand bell ensembles and other groups.  She has produced and recorded six CDS of primarily original music on her indie label Singing Strings.

Martha is Janis Joplin, Joan Baez and Jean Redpath all rolled into one!  Shes a treasure; her music lifts us up and reminds us why we are here!  Todd Moe   North Country Public Radio
