Biography

Martirio describes herself as "an archaeologist of music". She digs up popular Spanish and Latin musical treasures and modernizes them. Her enigmatic and sophisticated image is the exclusive stamp of an artist who is always sharp, inquisitive and ground breaking.

In the 80's, Martirio was an active member of the movida madrilea (hedonistic and cultural wave that took place in Madrid after the death of Franco) and today she is still always surprising her audience with constant reinventions of herself, original interpretations and fusions of traditional music.

For over 20 years Martirio has been renovating the Spanish copla (traditional, lyrical music) revealing its universality and liberating it from past clichs.
She has collaborated with very diverse artists including Chano Dominguez, Kiko Veneno, Raimundo Amador, Javier Ruibal, Miguel Poveda, Vicente Amigo, Lila Downs, Omara Portuondo, Chucho Valds, Simn Daz, Soledad Bravo, Ojos de Brujo, Marta Valds, Mara de Mar Bonet.

Her discography has gained her respect in Spain and abroad. Amongst her numerous prizes and acknowledgements, Martirio has been nominated for the Latin Grammys (BEST FLAMENCO ALBUM in 2002 for Mucho Corazn) and she has received two awards from the Spanish Music Academy (BEST ALBUM OF CANCIN ESPAOLA for Acoplados and BEST FUSION ALBUM 2007 for Primavera en NY released by Calle 54 Records-Sony BMG). Andalusia's local government has also awarded her for her artistic activity.

2009 she recorded her album 25 anos de Martirio with her son Raul Rodriguez (known also as tres player from Son de la Frontera) and got the award from Cubadisco in 2010. One year later she recorded El aire que te rodea with the Cuban Composer Jose Mara Vitier.

One of the highlights 2012 was singing with Chavela Vargas songs dedicated to Federico Garca Lorca.
