"Live Review: Celtic Connections 2014"

Live Review: Celtic Connections 2014 – Folk Radio UK
The evening opened with a short set from Maru Tarang. Long-time collaborators Australian slide guitarist Jeff Lang and tabla player Bobby Singh joined forces with traditional Rajasthani musicians Asin Langa (sarangi, vocals) and Bhungar Manganivar( khartal). Lang and Singh have a varied repertoire, built around Australian roots music tinged with Classical Indian rhythms. When this is fused with the plaintive voice of Asin Langa’s sarangi, his Rajasthani qawali vocals and Bhungar Manganivar’s nimble percussion, the effect is mesmerizing. Lang’s slide guitar takes on a sound not unlike a sitar, with deft, precise and imaginative use of a slide; Bobby Singh’s tabla can be soothing or dramatic in equal measure. - Folk Radio UK

Bio

Maru Tarang:

Jeff Lang: Guitars & Vocals

Asin Langa: Sindhi Sarangi & Vocals

Bobby Singh: Tabla

Bhungar Manganiyar: Khartal

By invitation of the RIFF Festival, Australian artists Jeff Lang & Bobby Singh travelled deep into the deserts of Rajasthan to meet Asin Langa & Bhungar Manginyar. The collaboration began which would span genres, continents and styles, titled Maru Tarang, by Divya Bhatia who initiated the project.

With this virtuosic musical conversation we are treated to centuries old Rajasthani folk songs given new flavours via Australian roots, seminal blues by Robert Johnson given a taste of India, new and original fiery improvisations and music of a deep, soulful expression.

These artists who do not share a common language have developed their music to be all they need to converse and converse most eloquently they do.

Maru Tarang have performed in India (Rajathani International Folk Festival), Scotland (Celtic Connections) and Australia (Parramasala).
