"CD Review"

MARY D and her musical talents abound in this 18 year old's songs of love and dedication to her craft. Piano, guitar, and singing keep this girl busy as she spreads her love of good music to the world. Inspired by Jewel, she proclaims a few things I will quote from her page. dedication--"I am determined to be an old hag and play songs to my cats." and honesty -- "Okay, so I write a lot about love. Suck it." I love this girl already. - CD Review.com

"Grand Slam Review 2008"

Youth Speak's Brave New Voices team will consist of Corbin Bugni, who scored highest in the overall Slam, Mary Lambert, Rose McAleese, Clare Lilliston, and Milinik Yewondwossen. Each of these outstanding individuals had a particular, defining style to their performance, and a demeanor that matched their heartfelt, confessional poetry.

Bugni shone on stage with an incredible, dizzying half-poem half-rap about abstract wordplay as instructed by Dr. Seuss' "Hop On Pop." Lambert's confessional poetry about being a lesbian and her struggles with substance abuse issues caught my breath in my lungs. Meanwhile, Lilliston's soft-spoken pleas for peace and change, and her endearments for falling in love with a newborn Christ-as-carpenter brought a sweet, subtle charm to the Slam's fore. Yewondwossen's flow was unbelievable, and his poetry shifted between topics so quickly it was an actual internal battle to keep up with his wordplay. - Seattle University

Bio

Singer/songwriter Mary Lambert was only 16-years-old when a demo of her music was produced. It was a quick start to a music career that veered in wildly eclectic directions, from spiritual confessions, to blues-rock jams, to spoken word, to good 'ole jazz.

Lambert was born in Seattle, Wa on May 3, 1989. The daughter of another Mary Lambert, a singer-songwriter who had her own airtime in the eighties, Lambert was exposed to a variety of musical styles at home, from jazz to contemporary to opera. At the age of 12, Mary began playing local gigs with a fellow cellist, under the band name Foxglove. Since then, she has appeared with bands/artists playing cello, singing backup, playing guitar or piano: The Happy Accidents, Precious Troy, Jason Pitsch, The Ameriguns, and Braden Torres.

Much of Lambert's lyrics since her early days of writing confessional songs and poetry address issues of overcoming emotional pain and personal tragedies. After losing her guitarist from Precious Troy to cancer in 2007, things seemed bleak. In that same year, Lambert faced the daunting task of coming out to her friends, family, and church.

In the last year, Lambert has been attending Cornish College of the Arts, pursuing her Music Composition degree. "I believe it will make me a more well-rounded songwriter," says Lambert of the costly tuition, "It'll be worth it."

Lambert has been studying under Linda Waterfall for the last year and a half, which has taken her songwriting to a completely different level.

In the last year, Lambert has also branched out to the spoken word genre. Competing over the last year to make it on the Seattle Youth Slam Team during several amounts of preliminary rounds, the final verdict was made in mid-May 2008, Mary Lambert will be competing in Nationals this July in Washington D.C.

Influenced by artists as diverse as Jewel, Feist, Tori Amos, and Ben Folds, Lambert spent the last two years gigging at various Seattle coffeehouses and bars. Lambert has always had a distinct sound- soulful, honest lyrics, with a controlled warm voice, and an ocassional bluesy undertow.
