Bio

Bernardo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1975. Following a family tradition where everyone was a musician he started playing the saxophone at the age of fourteen. In 1992 he won first prize as a soloist in the Expoadolescente national arts competition. In 2000 Bernardo graduated from the Contemporary Music School in Buenos Aires where he won a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
At Berklee he was the recipient of two competitive awards (Charlie Parker Scholarship, Woodwinds Department Achievement Award) graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2003 with a Major in Jazz Performance. Bernardo had the great chance to work under the instruction of such fine jazz educators as Joe Lovano, Hal Crook, Jerry Bergonzi, Ed Tomassi, Jeorge Garzone and Phil Wilson. Monk’s professional career in Boston includes performances and recordings with Oscar Stagnaro’s Peru Mestizo, Tito Puente Jr., Patricia Vlieg, Sol y Canto, Eguie Castrillo’s Latin Big Band, Marta Gomez, Pablo Ablanedo and Ryles Jazz Orchestra.
In May 2004, Monk with pianist Octavio Brunetti took first prize in the Best Tango Duo category at the New York City International Tango Competition for professional instrumentalists. In the tango scene Bernardo performed and recorded with celebrated musicians such as Nestor Marconi, Daniel Binelli, and Leonardo Ferreyra.
Monk also organizes Argentine Tango clinics and lectures in Colleges and Universities.
Bernardo Monk is an outstanding young artist in constant development, who is finding his own voice in music.
