Master and Margarita

Master and Margarita was born out of a series of songs written by Ryan Holzer in both Nebraska and New York. After a few small solo performances in the New York City area, he and friend Mitch Raftery realized - in the wee hours one morning - that their voices juxtaposed quite well, and they began performing together as a duo. Both very accomplished singers, Ryan and Mitch's music was expressive, tuneful, nostalgic, and pastoral. As the two grew tired of being relegated to small open-mic shows, they discussed eventually fleshing out the group's sound. When Tyler Holzer, Ryan's brother, cancelled his plans to move west, he offered his services to the band as lead guitarist and moved to Brooklyn. The threesome learned that their good friend Seth Petersen was, in fact, an experienced drummer, and the now quartet began playing together in late August 2006.

The band premiered at a Brooklyn loft on September 28th, has since played numerous clubs and bars in Brooklyn and Manhattan, toured the midwest, and recorded their debut EP, Planes and Waves.
