"Masts Palindromes EP Review - 4/5 Stars"

MASTS ****
Palindromes (self-released)

These Cardiff locals have assembled an EP of energetic and accomplished posthardcore in the vein of late 90s group Kid Kilowatt, and their criminally underrated Guitar Method album. This means musical dexterity, soul-searching lyrics and a dynamic and considered approach to melody without entering the realm of blandness. GM - Buzz Magaine

"Masts - 5 Song Demo Review"

South Wales' burgeoning post-hardcore scene has produced another killer of a band in the shape of Masts, a super tight four piece from the capital, who namecheck At The Drive-In and Fugazi among their many influences.

Their demo follows months of hard graft onstage, and the resulting five tracks indicate they're on their way to developing a strong signature sound.

Opener 'Poured Away' is a catchy pop-punk dream reminiscent of ‘From Here to Infirmary'-era Alkaline Trio, but Masts get down to serious business with 'Astronomy Autonomy' and 'Overhead Kick' - two spiky, skilfully crafted gems that showcase the full extent of the groups musical prowess. Demo closer 'The End' is the perfect taster of great things to come.

With songs like these, this could be the beginning of something pretty darn special. - Torch The Treasure

"Masts - 2012 Demo Review"

Known, until last year, as Occupation: Horse, and I can't help but lament the switch from a name that made me giggle every time I clocked it to one slavishly adopting the 'single plural word, no definite article' formula. No reason to hold it too much against Cardiff quartet Masts, though, as they execute a pleasing mix of twiddly late 90s emo and the kind of post-hardcore that harbours Big Rock ambitions. 'Overhead Kick', the first, shortest and punkiest of the three songs, is the clear gem here. - Buzz Magazine

Bio

Formed in 2011. Initially we started as a three piece with no vocalist. Wallace joined shortly after on bass with Tom moving to guitar and sharing vocal duties with Bobby.

Taking influence from punk bands like Leatherface, Hot Water Music, At The Drive In and Alkaline Trio, post hardcore outfits Jawbox, Drive Like Jehu and Fugazi, we aim to play forward thinking, interesting and soulful punk rock.

We completed a couple of demo recordings to good reviews at the start of 2012 and recorded our first EP at the Ranch stuios in Southampton in November 2012. This is available for free download from our bandcamp page. We're awaiting completion of the artwork so we can make the physical copies available at shows or for order.
