"Latin America: Bands to follow: MATAPLANTAS"

Buenos Aires is characterized for being a city full of shades and contrasts; there is music for every taste and for all, everyone takes what more pleases to them. The proof of this variety is two Argentinean bands that we have already featured previously on SPIN Earth Banda de Turistas and No lo Soporto respectively.

Now, well, it’s time to the follow-up with a band which style takes root in the Sci-fi Psychodelic beats, has details of space rock, art rock, disc and avant-garde and a digestible pop where little by little is joining in something extremely entertaining. It’s name? Mataplantas. Conformed by Pablo De Caro, Maximiliano García, Nazareno Gil and Pablo Malaurie, Mataplantas is today one of the most interesting bands that allows their creativity flow and actually worry about transmitting a clear message to their listeners.

Influenced by the arts (the three of them met while studying theatre), 80's movies and Bands like MGMT, Gorillaz, The Beatles, Beck and Flaming Lips, Mataplantas possesses already 3 record productions: " El Sueño del Hombre Pulpo" published in 2005 across Warner Music and Isopo Records, "Hickie" launched in 2006 by Ultrapop and Matarex and "Escape del Planeta Viviente " on the part of EMI and Matarex in 2008. In personal opinion, this last album has turned into a showy and attractive album due to its love related songs, scientific and apocalypse theories.

In 2009 they had the opportunity to visit New York for ten days where they performed at venues like Shrine, Nublu, Hecho en Dumbo and Pianos. They also met important people and producers from the mainstream like Bill Racine (Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev) who expressed to them his interest in collaborate with them.

Promoters and music listeners from Latin America, Mataplantas is no doubt a band that we need to keep our eyes on and be ready for what they have under their sleeve. In the meantime, here we leave you with 3 of their songs for you to soak in their particular style.

- SPIN EARTH

"What people are listening to.. Argentina."

Mataplantas makes melodic rock and roll, the kind that Buddy Holly played but with the feel of the Flaming Lips. Four hot Argentines playing great songs of an indie persuasion and having fun onstage is a win situation. One of Mataplantas’ singers, Pablo Malaurie, is currently performing solo with his album “Festival del Beso,” a collection of ethereal, haunting, whiny pop songs that the artist plays live with toys and kooky vocal reverb for almost geisha girl effect. - MATADOR NIGHTS

"MATAPLANTAS"

In his third album, ESCAPE OF THE LIVING PLANET, lose track of their direct influences and begin to realize its own language, driven guitar pop, psychedelic delirium and an uncontrollable desire for emancipation
- Los Inrockuptibles

"RETURN OF THE FOUR GUITAR ROCK ETERNAUTAS"

First there was El sueño del Hombre Pulpo, the most introspective of hallucinations. Then they came up with Hickie, a deformed creature with a limited lifespan. This time the Twilight Zone is called “Escape del Planeta Viviente -” good things always come back around - Rolling Stone

"HEAT PUMPS FOR THE SEAS"

First it was chaotic but appealing "EL Sueño del hombre pulpo" (2005). Then came the surprising "Hickie" (2006), which was installed by sheer arrogance of talent in the count of the most creative albums of the decade. And now it's time to "Escape del planeta viviente" , an album procreated in the same field of play and freedom than before, but which, on first listen, one notices more emphatic and specific than previous ones. Clearly, no fumbles Mataplantas when making songs but also makes them. And very well - Suplemento NO / DIARIO PAGINA 12

"A JOURNEY BEYOND SOUND OF POP ROUTINE"

the Mataplantas not get caught easily and plan on a handful of psychedelic melodies and poetic pop irreverently ... The music of Mataplantas not simple, but be definitively is attractive. - Diario La Nacion

"ARGENTINE CHARM"

Mataplantas (literally "plant killer") is an Argentine outfit based in Buenos Aires and to put it mildly, they are good. So good, they are making the leap to NYC and are ready to grace us with that Argentine charm.

Bio

Mataplantas translates to Plant Butchers in English. The group, out of Buenos Aires, has a sound equal parts retro pop, garage, and indie rock and they deliver shimmying-worthy songwriting to legions of dancing fans. Vocal harmonies, samples and keys add layers of infectious melody to the classic rhythms that make the crowd do Argentine versions of the twist and the swim. It’s too hard not to move like a 60s dance scene when the beat is based on “ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ah-ah.”
Pablo de Caro, Pablo Malaurie, Maximiliano García, and Nazareno Gil grew up together and have played as a proper band since they were teenagers. “Escape del Planeta Vivente,” was released on EMI in November 2008, following up 2006’s “Hickie,” off their own imprint Matarex and “El Sueño Del Hombre Pulpo” released in 2005 on Warner Music. They’ve recently begun work on a follow up to the 2009 LP that took them to New York for the first time and gave them an opportunity to explore new territory with produced tracks weaving into live performance, with new toys and a fresh outlook. The band explored Manhattan and Brooklyn from their base in the Lower East Side, playing shows that left them wanting more New York City. Meanwhile, singer and guitarist Pablo Malaurie embarked on a tour of Europe to support his solo effort, “El Festival del Beso,” exposing his excellent record to fans across the continent before rejoining his band mates for the next chapter of Mataplantas back in Argentina.
