BandFolkRock

Mixing aspects of folk, rock, and classical, Match by Match plays a unique variety of melodic, heartfelt and straight up catchy tunes to lift the corners of your mouth. Also, we're easy on the eyes.

Biography

Match by Match was started almost by accident in March of 2010 when, due to random technological chance, Gray (of Red Lanterns) and Melissa met via internet chat. Realizing they were both frustrated by the lack of opportunity to make the kind of music they wanted to hear, they started collaborating, Gray playing guitar and Melissa playing accordion and piano.

Eventually, they recorded a demo EP, "Books," played several shows up and down New England, and generally created a ruckus. Somewhere along the way, they relocated to Ann Arbor and started wearing formalwear, not in that order.

Match by Match was recently named the winner of The Ark's Fall 2010 Student Songwriter Series and played as the featured special guest to Bobby Long at his debut performance at the Ark. In the relatively short time they've been a band, they've played with numerous local and national acts, including Chris Bathgate, The Ultrasounds, Archie Powell and the Exports, We Are The Willows, and received positive feedback from Radio Free Chicago, Mostly Midwest, Indie College, the Wenatchee World, and 107.1's John Bommarito (who featured us on his "Acoustic Brunch with John Bommarito").

"Books" and "My Constant Companion" EPs are available for download at matchbymatch.bandcamp.com, and MxM are hard at work recording their debut album "American Crowbar," which will be released this summer.

American Crowbar

Written By: Match by Match

fess up
you know it's true
it was a shitty thing to do

they say i'm no longer me
well you're no longer pretty
that's for sure

i got my constant companion
my iron bar, my life's reminder
i'm not the man i was before
i'll never be the man i was before

new england just don't hold any peace
not for a man like me
not for a man like me

we rise as one
you blew my mind out like
a heavy metal elephant gun
we are fighters
we got backpacks full of
coffee, cigarettes, and lighters

all we've got is one another
all we've got is one another
first one falls and then the other
all we've got is one another

Home

Written By: Match by Match

when the morning dreams of light
before the winter kisses the leaves goodnight
lay me down and let me go
let me go

little sparrows fill the sky
still their children yet to fly
when the north wind blows, go back home
they need you so
we need you so

so this road you've come to find
never leads you down the same way twice
so wait for me and i will too
when home is gone
well, home is gone

What You Need

Written By: Match by Match

let the radio crackle
smoke and explode
let us be kind to each other
before we lay down in the road

i've got a half tank of gas and a sleeping bag
and that's all i need
don't let it scare you when it
starts to bleed

i want to be what you need
i want to be what you need

let the static engulf us
let it get under our skin
let our shaking signatures be the only record
we ever lived
i want to see what's under your smile
i want to show you where i begin
i wanna find a place to be alone for a while
i wanna play to win

i want to be what you need
i want to be what you need

it was sunday, on the hour,
when the lord spoke to me
he had a voice like a seizure
i was shaking so hard my nose start to bleed
he said no respite for the righteous but i
keep the weary close to me
i said i want to be what you need
i want to be what you need
i want to be everything you need
i want to be what you need

Darling I

Written By: Match by Match

i am waiting to find out
whether i will let you down
i'll apologize profusely
when i come around

Keep your eyes open wide
it's the sound of breath and substance
at least a place to hide
i didn't write this winter
i guess i didn't try

i'm trying to love again but it's so hard
i looked into the future but all i saw were scars
she's the moon above me
and you are all the stars
darling i

pale blue skies
the belt loop missing on your jeans
first you made the sunlight
then you made the sea

i'll be as sweet as you can bear
i will kiss you softly
and i will touch you everywhere
i'll serve you like a purpose
tie ribbons in your hair

owe you everything i owe
spun you like a story
fine filaments of gold
crawled to your apartment
slept there on the floor
darling i

i'm trying to love again but it's so hard
love is not a future
it's just a tarot card
she's the moon above me
and you are all the stars

darling i
darling i

Torn

Written By: Match by Match

It’s a little yellow bird
In the corner of the room
It’s a fractured little girl
Her skin with bruises like tattoos
We tried to square away the odds
On this selfish little thing
It was the changing of the guard
And the beating of His wings

And I’m torn, yes I’m torn
Between where my home and my heart ought to be
Torn, since the day I was born
Between the friends who wont let me sleep
And I burn every bridge that I get to
So no one will dare follow me

And quitters never win
With the best of bloodhounds at your back
And you live in my hands and my veins while I sleep
But I’ll earn it, I’ll earn it every trait that I lack,
And it’s far away, all the chords and the keys
Thin as the skin of my teeth
And I stumble through Queens with this idiot grin
Carried more by my heart than my feet

I’m increasingly strange since you got in my blood
I’ve been locked in for days with no hint from the sun
It’s a key, it’s a crime, it’s a joke that kept us all
Laughing, laughing
And this world, oh it leaks all these fine points of light
And these broken glass hands just weren’t made for a fight
So I’ll buy you all drink and I’ll toast to tonight
To last forever, forever

And I’m torn, yes I’m torn
Between where my home and my heart ought to be
Torn, since the day I was born
Between the friends who wont let me sleep
And I burn every bridge that I get to
So no one will dare follow me

No Fun At All

Figured we’d hide out in Brooklyn
Spend a week just drying out
It’s bound to be a cold one
Looks like the sun is flickering out
All these street-lamps look like sentinels
Left from some ugly, ugly war
Mom said to drive up to Boston
But that place ain’t home anymore

Turns out you were right
And you knew it all along
The East Village is on fire
People are breaking out in song
All my friends are dying
Their bodies burning in the street
They keep torching all the buildings
The smell bitter and sickly sweet

So baby,
Put on your gloves
So baby,
I want to feel all your love
Because tonight we’ll dance on fire
And we’ll rise up like the sun
And tomorrow they’ll be looking for us

They're crawling on the beaches
The dead things marching from the shores
They’ve been waiting for this moment
Since before Jesus Christ was born
No more hiding in the shadows
The cities fall without a fight
After all these years of waiting
It was so easy it didn’t seem right

So baby, Put on your gloves
So baby, I want to feel all your love
Because tonight they’ll all be weeping
When they see what I have done
And tomorrow they’ll be looking for us

So baby, Put on your gloves
So baby, I want to feel all your love
Because tonight we’ll reign triumphant
And we’ll feast on human blood
And tomorrow they’ll be looking for us
And tomorrow they’ll be looking for us
And tomorrow they’ll be looking for us
