Bio
Matotumba (MTTMB) is an electronic music group formed in the year 2000 by a collective of
visual artists from Puerto Rico. It’s mostly known for its experimental music proposal and the
inclusion of visual-art at their live shows.
Currently the group’s line-up is composed of Jorge Martínez Picón, Milton Ramírez Malavé
and Héctor Román and often collaborating with fellow experimental artists such as Robin
Alicea and Jose Vega (Shhh, PPRSS), Ariel Hernández (Similar, Introdujos), among others.
Along with the psychedelic rock band, Psiconautas, are part of the shoegazing / noise / experimental
group, ‘The Alliance’ or AEI (Intergalactic Exploration Alliance).
It’s not an easy task to assign a genre to Matotumba’s musical style since it’s very evolutive.
In the beginning, their approach to experimental music was based on improvisation with
strong tribal roots and over time, it leaned more towards rock and electronica.
Over the course of a decade they have managed to compile an extensive discography and
videography as well as producing the documentary ¿matotumba? which chronicles their trajectory
from its inception to the present. Matotumba has presented their audio / visual projects
in Radio and TV; art galleries, museums and countless music, theater and film festivals;
spanning the entire island of Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, Italy and the United States.
