Matshidiso

Live gigs by Matshidiso (pictured right) have been intimate affairs to date, but this talented independent vocalist/musician (who's name translates as 'blessing' or 'consolation' ) seems capable of big impact. Her recent Bijou set at the south London hot spot The Bedford immediately made an impression thanks to her warm, engaging charisma (plenty of audience banter), rich vocals and breezily upbeat songwriting. Matshidiso's original material skillfully melds a variety of elements, from South African Folk, chanson, gospel and classic soul, and energetic funk rhythms. She'll be showcasing that blend on her upcoming EP Nursery Rhymes for Grown Folks, which incorporates traditional story telling, modern everyday observations and creatively catchy melodies. The results are impressively assured (and never sickly), radiating good-time spirit.
