Matt Reed is a young aspiring rapper, no older than 25, originating from Dallas, Texas. I had the pleasure of becoming a fan of his music in 2012 after listening to and downloading his debut mixtape, "The Red Room Project". Throughout the following years he's released four projects, "The Matt Reed Project", "Student of the Game", "Against All Odds", and "P.S Too Busy Wavin". All of these projects are available for streaming on his SoundCloud and the first two projects can be bought on Apple Music. His youtube also contains many of his songs with thousands of views but after listening to him you would expect him to have more. The problem isn't his talent, it's his work being incorrectly publicized. "DRAKE NEW SONG- Divine Obsession" is an example of the title of Youtube video, and as fans of music, you click on it anticipating the potential of a new song you haven't heard yet. As the song begins you begin to listen; now if you have a good ear and know the sound of Drake, you'll realize this isn't him, but many naive ears cause others to believe it is Drake. There are so many videos of Matt Reed's music named as Drake with hundreds of thousands of views while Matt Reed's original videos have tens of thousands or less. Nine times out of ten that song title with "*NEW DRAKE*" is actually a song of Matt Reed's. Many mistake him from Drake because he's such a dynamic and versatile artist, he can spit an introspective 16, serenades about love, and uses a high energy flow; he sometimes combines all three in one track. Matt Reed is very connective to his fans and also very generous. After a brief Twitter conversation with him, I realized how humble he is and after asking about dates for his new music he asked for my email and sent me his mixtape "Against All Odds" weeks before the first single was released. Matt Reed is an aspiring alternative Hip Hop artist whose creative lyrical talents are “a force to be reckoned with in today’s music industry.” His first project, The Red Room Project was released in 2013 and started him on his musical quest to “chase his dreams because they stole his reality”, as he so eloquently quoted. His current project, the “The Matt Reed Project”, was released on Apple Itunes (soundcloud) - July 8, 2014 has been making waves in the Rap, Hip-Hop and R&B community. Matt Reed’s music has been classified as the best thing coming out of Dallas with a new style”.
Matt Reed is an innovative entrepreneur and not only writes his own lyrics, he also edits and produces his own videos. He is an independent recording artist, songwriter, singer and member of BMI.
Although Matt Reed’s ancestral roots originated in Lagos, Nigeria, he was born Matthew Theophilus Ojukwu, on May 8, 1991, in Dallas, Texas and grew up in the Highland Hills area, one of Dallas’ highest crimes area neighborhoods. He began creating music at the age of 9 because it was an outlet of self-expression and means for him to stay positive and off the troubled streets in the “hood”. Matt Reed’s childhood mantra - “I gotta stay on my grind until I shine”!
He later moved to the suburban Lake Highlands area and graduated with honors from Lake Highlands High School in 2008. He studied music at the Brookhaven College of the Arts and has worked with a local rap group, Self-Conscious and other artists Chaz French, Von Gifted and Kris Minor.
Matt Reed has performed at local Dallas venues such as Anne’s Place – Grand Prairie, the Prophet Bar – Deep Ellum, and has captured a worldwide fan base. Matt Reed receives comments from other artists and fans all the time, but one that stood out the most was from someone who really wasn’t a fan of Hip Hop music but said “This new hip hop genre generally isn't my thing, but wow man this is great! Definitely deserve more recognition. Matt Reed is changing the Rap game.
Every lyric on the “The Matt Reed Project” has a positive meaning and adds value to the individual’s listening experience because he “flows with a purpose”. Fyah Flame commented that “It's hard to find music that the public can relate too. This album has just that. Every song I found myself closing my eyes and reminiscing on a life event. Very well written. Definitely worth it”!
Matt Reed is “dynamic on all levels” and is constantly on his grind of creating new music and changing the Rap game! You can expect a new project to be released in the near future. In the meantime, keep listening and thank you for all of your support!
