This black history month we are concluding by introducing Matt U Johnson who considers himself a Pop island artist, originally from Staten Island, New York. By living throughout the world Matt feels that his style of music has an eclectic sound with a message!
He got his stage name from his Jamaican grandmother, Isolyn McDonald who pronounced it as Matt Chu! As a result he went with Matt U and added his surname, hence Matt U Johnson.
His music has many different international flavors from the variety of musical influences that have inspired him. Artists such as Bob Marley, Backstreet Boys, Snow, Shaggy, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Sean Paul, Sting and the list goes on.

The current release My Life is one of the singles on his EP Never Give Up. This is based on him growing up with music and the dream and vision of one day being an established major recording artist. In addition Matt U continues to give inspiration to others in order to pursue their dream and never give up no matter what. Now this particular recording process was very interesting because it gave him a chance to operate in a variety of studios and travel from the east coast to the west coast. The concept behind Matt U’s choice of producers was to keep the project international and hyped. As a result he has an Asian, an American and European producer. However his main producer hails from Sweden, Stefan Dj Nova Martensson, who has worked with Max Martin.
This EP from what we’ve heard is a futuristic masterpiece. A fusion of reggae, pop and EDM all rolled into one.
The EP has been receiving lots of positive attention from Sweden, Germany, England, and most recently the Netherlands. Being that he lived and attended school in Europe for a few years, has caused him to develop a special place in his heart for Europe. Therefore he wishes to do more live shows and business over there. Matt knows that a quality production like this takes a team effort. Therefore he wishes to give special mention to Solemly Productions, Cirious David and Team Matt U Johnson.
Matt has met several celebrities along his musical journey. Artists such Iyaz, Rasco p, Snoop Dogg Lion, Wyclef, Buju Banton, I Wayne, Mann, Steel Pulse, Foxy Brown, Alex Baldwin, Verdine White from Earth Wind and Fire, Ashford and Simpson. One of his most memorable performances thus far was interacting with the audience as he opened up for Buju Banton at the George Theatre in his hometown, Staten Island.
When asked what’s next for this artist on the rise his response was quick but humble stating that he and his team were mainly concentrating on the EP release and him as not only an artist but also a brand.

Here at TapSongz, we have been conducting research in the music industry to find talented up and coming artists from all genres! This week we came across Matt U Johnson, a young artist out of Staten Island, New York. Our TapSongz team was able to get the latest from rising artist in our exclusive interview.
With roots in Jamaica and America, Matt U Johnson is able to combine Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Reggae to create a unique sound. Growing up in New York City, he fell in love with music at an early age. “Being a mix of two cultures broadened my international taste for different styles of music, from the likes of Bob Marley, Sting, Busta Rhymes, Usher, and much more,” Johnson told our TapSongz team.
Johnson turned his passion for music into a singer/songwriter career that is starting to take off. He began writing his own music at the age of 13 and started singing and doing live venues at the age of 14 in New York City. In recent months, Johnson has been working on a new EP titled “Never Give Up”, which will come out sometime this year. Some singles are already available on iTunes and other digital stores all over the web. He is excited about the new EP and several media sites have covered the upcoming release already. “I am featured in a few magazines all over the country this month, which includes City Beat Magazine, One West Magazine, and Scope Magazine for my upcoming releases,” Johnson said.
Despite having such a young career, Johnson has already made strides with making connections within the industry. “I have met some awesome people on my promotional tours, my favorite being Wyclef Jean,” Johnson said. So far in his short career, Johnson has opened up for Def Jam artist Mann as well as Ca$h Out! While Johnson has already accomplished a lot, he has his sights set on the future. “My future goals are to release a full LP and build my brand as an artist to bring my talent to the next level,” he said.
Johnson has kept extremely busy with producing music in the studio, but he keeps occupied with several other hobbies outside of work. “Besides my music, I am an actor and model. I have modeled for Wilhelmina models for Mercedes Benz fashion week and currently I have a National Army commercial playing on T.V. called Army Mentality,” Johnson said. With traditional roots in the Caribbean nation of Jamaica and his Birthright in Staten Island, New York, Matt U brings a new and improved flavor to the music industry. His lyrical singing style is unique at best, blending solid elements of Pop, R&B, Hip Hop and Reggae along with EDM. The sounds are dynamically irresistible creating an atmosphere of get up jump, move your body and feet or sit back and relax allowing the conscious lyrics to transcend and take you to another place. Matt U’s, eclectic and extensive musical background with experience, combined with his overwhelming determination for performing has led to his truly promising, up and rising career as an artist that can’t and won’t be stopped musically.
This college educated youth on two continents, with a B.A. in Music and the advance knowledge of the ins and outs of the music industry has the desire and passion to succeed in creating music that will grow and build throughout the 21ft century.Matt U’s, hometown of Staten Island ,New York Council of the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island, presented him with a Excellence in the Arts grant in February 2009 and another one that summer for a significant free summer concert. Matt U has done both musical and modeling shows in New York City, the South West, United States and in various countries in Europe; He has walked down the runways for the legendary Wilhelmina modeling agency at the Mercedes-Benz fashion show on Fashion Week 2012. He has had an interview with R&B singer Ashanti. Also being interviewed by New York 1 News channel, New York Rocks television show, as well as been in the pioneer showcase of CTV a local cable television network in New York. Matt U has made appearances at such venues as the Madison square garden film festival, the Apollo Theater in Har-lem and MTV’s total request live show, and the world famous Sugar bar.
He has opened up for Reggae Super Stars Buju Banton, I- Wayne, Hip Hop artist's Mann, Cash Out, and Pop/EDM group the Cataracs & latin grammy nominee Christina Eustace at minerpalooza in front of 35k of people. He appeared in the Grammy – Award Winning band Steel Pulse music video "The Door of No Return" in a cameo scene. Matt U also dabbled in the acting genre. He has acted in The Sophomore which starred motion picture star Bruce Willis, the mov-ie "Fighting", the W.B.’s TV show –"Gossip Girl", daytime televisions "One Life to Live", and the film "Nights of Prosperity" doing minor roles as a walk-on. Recently, Matt U has done recruitment commercials for the United States Army that will be shown nationwide in 2013-2015.
This strongly driven artist has worked with music producers such as computer Paul Henton, whom has produced for established musical talents Akon, Inner Circle and others. Dj Nova an Swedish pro-ducer, who produced Matt’s single "Anything is possible", which has well over 100,000 views on YouTube and has a following internationally. Currently Matt U is working on his first album which has a new single called "My Life" and second single "No Way".
