Mayor Matt Allen and the Lil’ Buddies

With a recent relocation to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Matt Allen has found a home amongst the throngs of roots musicians “River City” has always been famous for. Hailing originally from Lethbridge Alberta, Allen has been crafting songs for nearly 15 years. His material has been lumped with that of Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, Nick Cave, and Fred Eaglesmith.

“He’s got a Darkness at the Edge of Town kind of passion, the growl of TomWaits and the awkwark mystery of a drunken (rather than stoned) Pink Floyd session…summoning images of greed, addiction and deceit, never mind the troublesome things that can happen to love on it’s path.”-Fish Griwkowski, Edmonton Sun

Matt’s recent history is as an Edmontonian. It was there that he posted many career highlights, including performances at South Country and North Country Fair, Co-Emcee w/ Carolyn Mark at the Calgary Folk Festival and A mainstage performance at the CKUA sponsored Alberta Sessions. A fertile music scene in Edmonton allowed Allen an opportunity to play with many talented pickers from such notable acts as The Corb Lund Band, the Swifty’s, AA Sound System and Junior Gone Wild.

Allen is currently awaiting the release of his second album "The Life and Times of Christian Banks." Recorded in Winnipeg with help from the D.Rangers this new recording does not exactly come hot on the heels of his 2002 release "Lonesome Rail", which hit #1 on the CJSR charts and received 4 stars out of 5 from the Edmonton Sun.

With a sarcasm befitting of a generation forced to reconcile it’s imminent extinction, Allen brings with him a whiskey fuelled, rambunctious stage show that is dangerous but somehow not unsafe.
