Biography

After 10 years of self teaching, traveling, recording, and writing, Matt enrolled in two years of music studies at Eastern Oregon University where he focused on arranging/composition and led a swing quintet of regional fame. After being drawn to New Orleans by it’s rough-edged honesty, and the older styles of jazz still played there, he moved to resume his education at the University of New Orleans studying guitar with Hank Mackie and Steve Masakowski. Matt can be found adding to and leading his own Traditional and Swing jazz groups around town, as well as arranging for and leading the Bustout Burlesque band. As an educator he is a three year veteran teaching the week long swing guitar workshop in the retreat environment of Wallowa Oregon.

Matt’s attention to the details of early masters and his freedom to incorporate the voice of his own generation keep his playing in the true improvised spirit of Jazz. Whether arranging or improvising, his sense of humor and unique creativity combined with an ever-growing respect of music come through in song as swinging sounds of life.
