Matt Brown

BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

I write songs about life, love, history and geography, and I play them with whatever kind of band I can muster up. Sometimes it's epic, and sometimes it's just me, J and Ben.

Biography

It all comes back to home. I have the blessing of parents who did (and still do) everything to love me and my brothers and sisters, and that sticks with you, and it doesn't stay hidden. Shared experiences of conversations, stories, church, books, music, love, heck, even sports. That's where the music comes from. Sure, slowly being exposed to the likes of ELO, Queen, the Doobie Brothers, CSNY, Cat Stevens, the Beatles (duh), Kansas, Boston, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, and eventually "rebellious" types like the Who and many others, helps. Moving away from home also brings out those emotions too, and I've had the chance to explore some new horizons. Playing with incredible musicians and learning to work with people helps. Confidence boosters like winning the Covenant College's Mountain Affair (twice) help. But ultimately it coes back to home, journeys to and from, and what I've learned along the way. That's where the music comes from.

Concerning You & Me

Written By: Matt Brown

What if I told you
That I was from another time
That I'd journeyed across
The centuries
Would you believe me
As I told you my story for the first time

Well maybe I'm from
Old Arthurian England
And I'm searching for that Holy Grail
Well I think I've found it in your smile
So give me a glimpse, and make my day worthwhile

Well I could be
Quite possibly from the Renaissance
Studyin' those Platonic Ideals
Well is it just platonic 'tween you and me
I guess we'll wait and see

'Cuz I
Have given it time
And now things aren't what they used to be
So give me a sign,
O, to clear up my mind
Concerning you and me

Well as you can see
It's just plain old me
In the here and now
And I guess that'll have to do
So as the band plays "Beyond the Sea"
Come on and dance with me

'Cuz I
Have given it time
And now things aren't what they used to be
So give me a sign,
O, to clear up my mind
Concerning you and me

May vs. June

Written By: Matt Brown

I can’t dance, but I can sing a song that’ll make you tap your toe
And at first glance, I might not look the best in a tuxedo

But there’s a light in your eyes that’ll make me bid my night’s goodbyes
To jeans with holes and I’ll rent some clothes

And I’ll feel like the richest man in the world
Not because our clothes are so darn bright
But because the girl with the golden curls
Is on my arm tonight

It was May; we were young and summer called to us
To come and play, who’d’ve guessed that different paths would fall to us
And the stars in your eyes were beginning to fade to the morning skies
But for a little while, I still had your smile

And I felt like the richest man in the world
Not because our clothes were so darn bright
But because the girl with the golden curls
Was on my arm that night

And I’m sorry, Miss Austen, but I must borrow your characters once again:

And as we held each other tightly, you were Emma, I was Knightley
And we held the world beneath us under the Moon

And it’s been just over one year and I’ve shed way more than one tear
Because May just isn’t the same when you’re in June

So right now, I need you to be just another girl
Because can’t you see, I’ve now got to find a different world
So don’t ask me what’s wrong, or if I’m alright
Because I’ve got to let go, got to leave you behind
And yes I’m painfully aware, that the cost may seem high
But that’s all that you’ll hear, because this is goodbye…goodbye…

Give Her Peace

Written By: Matt Brown

I know that this will hurt her
I know that I'll have to watch her cry
So please, dear Jesus,
Make this easier to bear

May she come to lay her sorrows down at your feet
For I know that when she does that you will give her peace

I hope goodbye is not forever
Because if it is then I might not recover
So please, dear Jesus,
Make this easier to bear

When I come to lay my sorrows down at your feet
I know that when I do, that you will set me free

Her heart will be stolen away
And I know that she'll be happy that day
But when that happens, I'm sure I'll shed a tear
And I'll pray this prayer, for you are near
Please, dear Jesus,
Make this easier to bear
Please, dear Jesus,
Hear my prayer

When I come to lay my sorrows down, at your feet
I know that when I do, that you will set me free
May she come to lay her sorrows down at your feet
For I know that when she does that you will give her peace
