Still working on that hot first release.

Over 10 years of entertaining and making music has brought Matt Groopie to this point. An underground music legend; known by many; yet kept in the dark. It all began in 1997 when Matt put together his first band, “The Rounders” (later re-named “Suburbia”) in which he was the drummer and lead singer. They played in backyards, rehearsed in basements, and only managed to record one tape on a karaoke machine, but that was the defining moment that sealed Matt’s fate as a musician. The passion he had for performing and mastering as many instruments as he could (which is evident in his latest album, where he plays all the instruments) has only grown and so has his music. “The Rounders” rocked out until 1999.

Turn of the century was a time of new beginnings for everyone, and Matt dived into the new millennium with a new band, “Vintage”, where he played guitar and sang. From 2001-2004, they recorded one CD in a studio and played a handful of shows at various venues around Toronto and at their local high school. What started off as a garage band grew into a local phenomenon and unsurprisingly, every show they played was sold out. Slowly but surely, Matt was moving closer and closer to the underground legend he is today. The exhilarating feeling of recording, performing and sharing his talent with people, motivated him and gave him the push to go bigger – and bigger he delivered.

From 2004-2009, “The Groopies” took Toronto by storm. They rose from the dull suburbia and made themselves known to the music and concert lovers in Toronto as well as the greater Toronto area. They released 3 records (Parking Lot, Rock and Roll and Suburban Wasteland), independently selling 5000 records off the side of the stage. The fan base kept growing and their unique sounds, with Matt Groopie singing and playing guitar, won the love and admiration of many. “The Groopies” played over 200 shows and have shared the stage with such great notable bands as Real McKenzies, Burning Brides, The Flatliners, The Mahones, The Matadors, Muck and the Mires and The Expos to name a few.

Even while playing with “The Groopies”, Matt had no intention of slowing down. He teamed up with his childhood friend Mitch Price (The Rounders) in 2008 to form a humorous pirate punk band. They only sang about pirates and they did it well. The handful of gigs they played were funny, entertaining and packed with great music. They only released 1 record, ‘Set Sail!’, as the band was originally intended as a joke.

While still playing with “The Groopies”, Matt embarked on another musical undertaking as a lead singer and guitarist. From 2008-2009, “King Beez” entertained Toronto with their talent, spunk and charm. They played over 50 shows and released 2 albums (Suburban Surfers and Weird Noises). The life of the band was short, but it doesn’t take a long time to make an impact and that is exactly what they did.

Now, after an extended hiatus from music, HE'S BACK. From the ashes of his fallen musical endeavours comes "Smoke Signals", his debut solo EP. Without any outside help, Matt Groopie sings and plays every instrument on this 5 song disc which includes instruments like the harmonica and other electrifying surprises. With this album, Matt is bringing back the excitement, the danger and the nostalgia of classic rock and roll with a modern twist. This five song disc shows a more mature Matt Groopie, playing host to the sounds of Blues, Country, Rock and Roll, Folk and Garage - it's all there. Backed by his new band, The Bandits, Matt is sure to rock you harder than ever with some great, fresh and new players and will leave you satisfied and wanting more!

Aside from his musical accomplishments, Matt Groopie is involved in many charitable organizations and has put on countless benefits for Sick Kids Foundation, Red Cross, Daily Bread Food Bank and World Vision to name a few. This is just the beginning for Matt Groopie as there are great things to come from this suburban prince of rock and roll.
