Bio

After cutting his teeth in the smokey blues jams of Houston, guitarist and harmonica player Matthew Brodnax has quickly become a formidable frontman in the Austin music scene. A true "student of the blues", Brodnax's encyclopedic knowledge of vintage blues has allowed him to play a brand of blues that genuine and true to the art without being derivative. These attributes have allowed Brodnax to play with such artists at Oscar Ornelas and The Hustle, Birdlegg, and Blues in the Night. However, it was only natural that he would form his own group that has become Matthew Brodnax and The Blues Sherpas.

Joining Brodnax on guitar and vocals is Mike Van Summern who moved to Austin after spending the time in a New England blues scene that fostered talents such as Ronnie Earl and fellow Maine native-turned-Austinite Nick Curran. Van Summern’s swing-blues guitar and vocals are a smooth and refreshing style that provides a perfect foil to Brodnax’s down-home howl.

Providing the backbeat and backbone of the group is the dynamic rhythm section of bassist Zaz Marshall(Early Times, Clan Dyken, Sacramento Theatre Company) and drummer John Kalny(Hector Ward and The Big Time, Jeff Jensen Band). Marshall and Kalny provide a solid groove that keeps the music flowing and the crowd on their feet.

Together, this exceptional lineup of musicians brings together a unique blend of classic Chicago and New Orleans Blues with just enough vintage soul and funk to keep it interesting. Already gracing such stages at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, Nook Amphitheater, and The Skylark Lounge, Matthew Brodnax and The Blues Sherpas are always booking, and are ready to lead your audience to best in blues!
