Originally from a small town North Carolina, Matthew Brookshire attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the North Carolina School of the Arts. Today he makes his home in Brooklyn, New York. His latest release "Best Friend" features 10 original songs, many of which were developed over the course of a year-long residency at Caffe Vivaldi in New York’s Greenwich Village. The album includes tracks produced by Matthew’s frequent collaborator Curtis Moore, and features guest vocals by singer-songwriter Kelli Rae Powell.

In 2007, Matthew’s song “Best Friend” was chosen as a finalist in the New York Songwriters Circle’s annual songwriting contest, which culminated in a live performance at the legendary Bitter End. Also in 2007, Matthew was chosen to attend the Northeast conference of campus activities bookers, which lead to college performances at the University of Connecticut, Rider University, and Southern Vermont College. He also performed live on George Washington University's campus radio station.

Matthew’s music can be heard in the Todd Solondz film "Palindromes", starring Ellen Barkin and Jennifer Jason Leigh, which played in the New York, Telluride, Venice and Toronto film festivals. Matthew has co-written (with Curtis Moore) songs for other artists, including #1 Billboard dance artist Kevin Aviance and R&B singer Ari Gold. In 2006, Matthew's "Wedding Song" was named an Honorable Mention in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. "Wedding Song" and "I Reveal My Heart" (both from the album 8 Songs) were added to Sirius OutQ radio and appeared in the Top 20. Matthew has performed showcases for EMI Records, Jezebel Music, the BMI Songwriter in Residence series and the International Pop Overthrow Festival. In June of 2006, Matthew was featured on the cover of Indie Sounds NY.

In 2009, Matthew teamed up with singer-songwriter Kelli Rae Powell to form the Orphan Music League, a boy/girl duo in the vein of The Weepies, She & Him and The Moldy Peaches. They are currently working on an album and tour.

Matthew's debut CD 8 SONGS is currently available at iTunes, CDBaby.com, eMusic and other online retailers.

Wedding Song

Written By: Matthew Brookshire

I flew half way across the country for this
changed planes and you’re changing your name Saturday
it’s so fun I can’t stand it
you both must be happy, hooray
but there’s one more thing I’d like to say

do you really wanna go and marry him?
are you sure you wanna go and marry him?
though it may seem like you’re living some dream
I see the life you’ll be waking up in
do you wanna marry him?

tell me where is the old girl I once knew?
did she trade in her dreams for a carat or two?
I know I’ve had one too many
but now i see clearly, I do
what living down here has done to you

do you really wanna go and marry him?
are you sure you wanna go and marry him?
there’s still some time to start changing your mind
I am telling you now as your friend
you don’t wanna marry him

didn’t we swear that we’d never give in to them or become one of them
maybe I misunderstood
‘cause we drifted apart the way people do, turned into someone new
I think I’ve lost you for good

I’m so glad I got to share in your day
it was beautiful, you look beautiful
I loved the part when he read us that poem by Rilke

Mexico

Written By: Matthew Brookshire

Mexico

I’ve never been to Mexico
it’s one of the places I’d like to go
would you like to go with me?
‘cause i’ve never been to Mexico
I need somebody who will know
all the things to do and see

we’ll leave when everyone’s asleep
there’s nothing here that will not keep
maybe come back in the spring
I don’t speak Spanish very well
I count on you to show and tell
I don’t wanna miss a thing

I’ve never been to Mexico
your family lived there years ago
does it call to you at night?
does it creep into your dreams? are you kissed by sun beams?
a crystal ocean blue and bright?

I’ve never been to Mexico
it’s one of the places I’d like to go
would you like to go with me?
‘cause i’ve never been to Mexico
I need somebody who will know
all the things to do and see

Better

Written By: Matthew Brookshire

things aren’t going so well, as if you couldn’t tell
I am twisting in the wind
I sit here wrapped in your possession, pardon my obsession
but I’ve still got you under my skin
maybe you have found someone who’ll make your dreams come true
you say he knows you better than I do

and you feel better than you used to
and you’re certain you’re the one he adores
well nothing’s better here without you
I am still yours, I am still yours

you don’t miss the way we touch or even think of me that much
I find that hard to believe
because my days are all about you, nights are cold without you
why does he get the love I should receive?
maybe you have found someone who’ll make your dreams come true
you say he knows you better than I do

chorus

maybe you have found someone who’ll make your dreams come true
no one knows you better than I do

chorus

I Fall Out

Written By: Matthew Brookshire

I never met anyone like you before
I knew you were good but you turned out to be so much more
now I spend all my days finding new ways to pinch myself
you're like a dream that I cannot get out of
you are the thing that teaches me about love
how can this be real what I'm feeling inside?

you're so sweet you give me pimples
I could eat out of your dimples
when we meet I could just fall out
I'm so in love

I never knew my way until love found me
now everyday love's falling all around me
late into each night I sit writing your name
you've got a thing that no one’s ever thought of
thought I was safe but somehow I have caught love
let me catch my breath as you scare me to death

chorus

tell me will we have a second date?
I can hardly wait for it
will you tell me that I’m special?
will you call my name out loud?

Best Friend

Written By: Matthew Brookshire

it's not me
but I wanted to be
everything that you want
I know you'll disagree
that said
here in water I tread
it could swallow me up
or it could take you instead
so I'll make you go away
I know it's not a nice thing to do
but it is no longer safe
to stay here with you

best friend, you should know
I tried not to love you
go, though my heart will break like a bone
it's better to love you alone

it's not me
I'm not myself recently
everything bubbles up
spills right out of me
but take heart
this is the scariest part
in time we'll forget
wonder what made that scar
can you believe me when
I tell you that it wasn't my plan?
but you opened and I fell in
I'm fighting it as hard as I can

best friend, you should know
I tried not to love you
go, though my heart will ache when you're gone
it's better to love you alone

it's not me
but I wanted to be
everything that you want
if it were all up to me...

best friend, you should know
I tried not to love you
go, though my heart will ache when you're gone
it's better to love
best friend, you should know
I tried not to love you
go, though my heart will break like a bone
it's better to love you alone
best friend...

Not My Friend

Written By: Matthew Brookshire

People lie right to your face
They tell you that you’re great
Do you wonder what they say
When you turn and walk away?
I’m a little bit naïve
But I don’t need to be appeased
If I show you how I bleed
Will you give me what I need?
Or be a stranger tonight?
Lover of mine, help me keep out the light

Baby, let me hide here
Do not let them in
I feel safe inside here
You are not my, you are not my
You are not my friend

I was running with a pack
Thought I knew who had my back
As we stumbled through the black
Kept the family intact
You are something new to me
Closer than a friend can be
But will you give me what I need?
Don’t be a stranger tonight
Lover of mine, help me keep out the light

Baby, let me hide here
Do not let them in
I feel safe inside here
You are not my, you are not my
You won’t be my friend
We both have too many of them

What I need right now is a back-up singer, a homerun swinger,
A good luck bringer when the bad times linger

Baby, let me hide here
Do not let them in
I feel safe inside here
You are not my, you are not my
Baby, let me hide you
I won’t let them in
They won’t ever find you
You are not my, you are not my
You are not my friend
You’re more than my friend
You are not my friend
