There is nothing that comes from the collective musical minds of the Freakin Records crew that isn’t masterful. Obvious nod to The Beatles are evident throughout the 35 minutes and change that make up this album, but it never feels derivative or plagiaristic. The production values here are quite simply amazing, professional, clean and all the while exude an organic sound that is this bands trademark. Clay is one of the state’s most gifted singer/songwriters, and his talents are showcased here in a damn near perfect record. This cake is well worth your time. – Tony Tarbox - Art Scene

“Eat Cake!” is Iowa pop-rock singer-songwriter-multi–instrumentalist Matthew Clay’s best effort to date, though it seems like only the tip of the iceberg for this promising musician. Most of the album’s 11 songs have catchy melodies and clean arrangements that help identify Clay’s radio-friendly sound on breezy pop tunes like “Hazy May” and “The Cake Song.” But what sets apart “Eat Cake!” is its improved musicianship and mature songwriting on songs about more heady subjects like greed (“All Hail Dead Presidents”), the pursuit of cool love (“Retro Savoir Faire”) and living for the day (“Falling Sand”). Clay even enlists the help of local hard rockers Index Case to lend some darkness and edge to “Wednesday Full Of Woe” – and it works quite well.
