BandChristianGospel

A Southern Gospel/Light Contemporary male trio that focuses on praising the Lord in song and excitement. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and be blessed as the gospel is presented.

Biography

The Helmsmen are 3 male tenors who split the lead and backup vocal parts, often within the same song. Even in the closest listening environment, it's hard to pick out who is singing lead unless it's a solo. The group name has been around since the 70's but has had ever changing membership. When the founder moved to Michigan, the current group was formed and kept the name. It's interesting the way God put us together and we thank Him that He did.

In concert, you can expect to hear songs by The Booth Brothers, The Gaither Vocal Band, and even Mercy Me. The group also has original songs written and produced by one of it's members, Matthew Ide.

It's the desire of The Helmsmen to serve the Lord in all they do. At every single concert you can expect not only to be blessed, but to watch as the Lord blesses these men. Praise His Holy Name and To God Be The Glory.

Road Map

Written By: Matthew Ide

My car was smoking, on a back road; I took a shortcut so I thought
My tire’s flat, and I got mad; I can’t believe this was Your fault
As I stood there so confused, I felt abandoned and abused
I looked around for miles, and I saw nothing

I’m looking up for the answer, my will was spreading like cancer
Radiate my heart and end all my foolish plans
I am weak, but You are strong; though meaning well I may be wrong
Move my feet to go along with, wherever You lead

It’s early morning, and with no warning, a storm of silence was on the way
Now I can’t stay here, but I can’t move; I’ve got a list of things to do
People stopped to help me out; explanations mixed with doubt
With a pile of “maybe’s”, the car’s still broken

I’m looking up for the answer, my will was spreading like cancer
Radiate my heart and end all my foolish plans
I am weak, but You are strong; though meaning well I may be wrong
Move my feet to go along with, wherever You lead

It was no accident that my road came to an end
And You knew where to find me when I broke down, yeah
Someday I’ll understand, the road You brought me on
Yeah, You gave me a lift and You towed me along my Friend, my Friend

I’m looking up for the answer, my will was spreading like cancer
Radiate my heart and end all my foolish plans
I am weak, but You are strong; though meaning well I may be wrong
Move my feet to go along with, wherever You lead

My car is rolling, down the highway
I threw my map out the window…

How Many Times?

Written By: Matthew Ide

When the world slaps me in the face
I’m supposed to trade my cheek in for forgiveness
But it’s hard…taking shots each day
And my neck is sore from turning both directions
But you stood alone; battered, torn, and beaten
You stood alone, and it leaves me asking questions, like…

How many times have You forgiven?
How many times have You borne my shame?
They beg to be answered, but answers aren’t enough
To understand…Your love

And when the past knocks on my door, I can’t believe the bitterness within me
It’s like my heart just shatters on the floor
And clouds of rage and anger shadow over me
But Your Father forsook You, and so did Your friends
So how can you love me? I ask again…

How many times have You forgiven?
How many times have You borne my shame?
They beg to be answered, but answers aren’t enough
To understand…Your love

How many times have You forgiven?
How many times have You borne my shame?
They beg to be answered, but answers aren’t enough
To understand…Your love
Your love

Martyr

Written By: Matthew Ide

I never met you, but I feel I know you
And I may never know all that you’ve gone through
But I know someday
We will meet in a land so far away
With our stories we can share, and He will be there

I hear Your voice calling me
It’s time I get down on my knees; yeah
And listen for Your Holy voice to lead
Where I need to go
And when this world turns You away
I’ll be looking for the day
When You look at me and say
“Well done” and “Welcome home”

When you are alone, what do you think of?
Those gone before, and all about His love?
There are souls who are lost; did you think that your life may be the cost?
Does it matter much at all?
You’ve answered His call

I hear Your voice calling me
It’s time I get down on my knees; yeah
And listen for Your Holy voice to lead
Where I need to go
And when this world turns You away
I’ll be looking for the day
When You look at me and say
“Well done” and “Welcome home”

For the One, I know, who can make a loaf of bread from stone
Through His power I can do anything, and I am willing

I hear Your voice calling me
It’s time I get down on my knees; yeah
And listen for Your Holy voice to lead
Where I need to go
And when this world turns You away
I’ll be looking for the day
When You look at me and say
“Well done” and “Welcome home”

Whittled Down

Written By: Matthew Ide

You see a purpose, You have a plan
Like the architect that has the grand design
Termites have eaten up my life, and bitter roots beneath me lie
Still You want me, why?

Whittled down, shaped from a piece of driftwood You have found
Like an instrument that never made sound
I’m slightly out of tune, but You’re working on that too

I’m hard and stubborn, and full of knots
And NOTS to questions of “Will you?”
My bark is strong, my bow is weak, I’m hollow and covered by disease
But You wipe me clean

Whittled down, shaped from a piece of driftwood You have found
Like an instrument that never made sound
I’m slightly out of tune, but You’re working on that too

I should have been mulch, sawdust or a toothpick
A piece of firewood, an ember ever-fading
I was Your cross

Whittled down, shaped from a piece of driftwood You have found
Like an instrument that never made sound
I’m slightly out of tune, but You’re working on that too
Thank You Jesus
