Beautiful Life

Written By: Matthew Shadley Brauer

Wake up! It’s just a dream
The clock says it’s quarter till five
Wake up! You’re not falling
It’s quiet now – you’re still alive
Secure enough to let me roam
Safe enough to call it home

No place to go
No place to be
It’s a beautiful life

Sunshine to start your day
The clock says that you’re running late
Sunshine in the next room
The obligations will just have to wait
Secure enough to let me roam
Safe enough to call it home

No place to go
No place to be
It’s a beautiful life

It’s a fine, fine day
To roll around with a special friend
Few and far between
The day may never come again

Milestones

Written By: Matthew Shadley Brauer

I’m sanctified while a living portrait
Turns to cast its eye
Distant shadows whisper tales of mercy
While I drift from her good-bye
I’ve been away for too long
Too long to be easy
It may be time to question why

I’m coming back home
Through the state of my birth
Another roguish sign over God’s red earth
It should have seemed likely
If I ever did learn what it was worth
But I still haven’t changed

Milestones and white picket crosses
Mark the highway home
Graveyard smiles whisper tales of lifetimes
Through the age I called my own
I’ve been away for too long
Too long to be easy
I’ll be damned to cry alone

If I recant, you’ll understand
I never left my native land
The stars and bars and Ku Klux Klan
Never left my native land

Milestones and white picket crosses
Mark the highway home

Savage

Written By: Matthew Shadley Brauer

You simplify with all your reason
And hold me down with wicked treason
I'll go where you can't tease me anymore

Love of my life
You're gonna go far
A savage is what you are

Draw the bead and take your aim
Lock me out I'll face my shame
And I'll go where you can't reach me anymore

Love of my life
You're gonna go far
A savage is what you are

Late at night I'll walk the streets
Or take a dive between your sheets
And I'll go where everybody's been before

Love of my life
You're gonna go far
A savage is what you are

It's many moons and I'll dare say why
From that distance you left me crying
And I'll go where you can't hurt me anymore

Love of my life
You're gonna go far
A savage is what you are

Generations

Written By: Matthew Shadley Brauer

At four A.M. the bars close down
Underneath the red light
Am I safe to wonder home?
A stranger's face was in that crowd
I recognized some street life
Indeed I am all alone

Twenty-five years of solitude
I'm none the worse for that
Thirty-nine degrees of latitude
Remind me where I am

At three o'clock in the afternoon
My mind melts all over you
But I can't reach the telephone
Detailed beauty was nothing new
But I scrutinized the only view
And pissed it away - now it's gone

To the place where the angels dare
Look at me with their acid stare
Holding out for something strange
In the hope that things will change
In generations without observations

From far beyond the tree line
I can hear her laugh
I'm well aware that my fifteen minutes are done
I don't remember at the time
I was following the Shining Path
Sensations bought and sold two-for-one

Twenty-five years of solitude
I'm none the worse for that
Thirty-nine degrees of latitude
Remind me where I am
