The son of character actor, Matt Clark, and playright Erica Lann Clark, Matthias grew up in the Greenwich Village, NYC. In 5th grade he began his formal music studies with Michael Feldman. (Founder of St. Lukes Chamber Orchestra). He was a member of the famed junior high school band Shieks Freaks. He went to Music and Art High School. He began teaching guitar and playing professionally at age 15. In high school he played guitar for ground breaking African Hi-Life band Hedzulah Soundz (Hugh Masekela). He is a founding member of the Speakeasy co-op and The Cornelia Street Songwriters Circle. A member of John Beasleys (Miles Davis) Band in High School, he studied theory and composition at Berklee College of Music, improvisation and world music with Karl Berger at The Creative Music School, Street theater with Bread and Puppet, Vocal coaching with Seth Riggs, and acting at The Lee Strasburg Theater Institute. In the 80's He was Al Pacinos' personal assistant.
He founded pop-rock band "King Holiday" with Ben Margulies [ Mariah Carey] and Fima Ephron [Natalie Merchant]. King Holiday was a regular weekend headliner at the famed CBGB's in NYC. He formed Jazz-rock jam band "The Cry" with Adam Rodgers, Ben Margulies and Fima Ephron He created Americana rock band "River Dogs" with Rob Cafarro , Glen Sherman and Jon Faulhaber. River Dogs worked with Eddie Kramer and Skyline Studios. Matthias has been Improvising Songs since he was 11.
Now Matthias lives in San Luis Obispo CA. He co-founded Body a funk-rock band with Greg Garman (Selena & The Scene), Joe Duran (Soulamente) and Scott Andrews. He is lead singer in Unfinished Business, a 60's cover band that includes Terry Lawless( U2 ). Matthias is gigging with his jam band The Cry and acoustic solo shows often accompanied by his wife Katie Franklin. He is a musical artist in residence @ The Sanitarium in San Luis Obispo.
Creating new songs endlessly, Matthias is an automatic writer, a soul singer and guitarist. A bush-whacker. A tree lover. A vegetarian. A father, a lover, and a son. A true believer in the power of art to change the world for the better. Matthias has a home based recording studio "Bear Bones Productions" where he is currently recording new works with Greg Garman on drums.
Matthias & The Cry plays world soul roots funk/ ensemble improvisation!

The Cry is a jam-band led by Matthias Clark. The band is an ensemble workshop playing songs that range from Folk-Rock to World-Jazz and Funk-Soul. Riff-based material built on the backbone of grooves created by Antiyeh Mensah [Pan-African Orchestra] percussion & Greg Garman [Selena Gomez and the Scene] drums.
Bass lines are derived from afro-cuban roots keep folks dancing. Matthias's voice and guitar paint pictures of real-life love and sacrifice, while keeping the hooks up-front.
Jazz informed keyboard work by Mark Pietri fattens the color-pallet. The band is often joined by gifted friends.
