"Record Review-quotes"

January 30, 2004:
Phases and Stages
Texas platters
BY JIM CALIGIURI

Selected quotes:

"Now the keyboard, harp, and trombone player steps out front with his own band with a platter that's an interesting mix of original tunes and covers from the songbooks of Bob Dylan, the Doors, and bluesman Jimmy Oden. Taken as a whole, Hubbard's debut is a loose-limbed affair at times recalling the melodic side of Tom Waits, while also shining light on his blues roots."

"Hubbard finishes off with "Lift Me Up," a country-gospel original that features Willie on lead guitar and backing vocals, a distinctive touch to an overall promising...debut." - Austin Chronicle

"Live Shots by Christopher Gray"

July 6, 2001:
"It was especially fun when Hubbard strolled among the tables during a few trombone solos; it's nearly impossible to turn aside the tip jar when someone's blowing a big brass tube right in your face." - Austin Chronicle

Bio

Matt Hubbard wows audiences with his boogie-woogie piano, harmonica, trombone and baritone voice playing what the Austin Chronicle calls "back-alley beatnik blues." Matt is a rising star in the Austin, Texas music scene as a solo performer, bandleader, sideman, studio musician and producer. He has worked with Willie Nelson, Ray Price, Fastball, Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead and many others. Willie Nelson wrote in his memoir The Facts of Life and Other Dirty Jokes: "Matt Hubbard, remember that name. I believe you'll be hearing a lot more from him in the future." You may have heard him already, considering that his credits include co-producing Willie Nelson's "Rainbow Connection" (Island 2001), Grammy-nominated for Country Album of the Year. Matt played harmonica, keyboards, and bass as well as recording and mixing the album. He also recorded Willie and Ray Price's "Run That By Me One More Time" (Lost Highway 2003), nominated for Country Album of the Year. Matt played keyboards on the "Babe: Pig in the City" movie soundtrack album produced by Michael Orvitz (Pink Floyd's "The Wall").
