Bio

For two years, a truly unique story has been brewing on the quaint campus of St. Olaf College, MN. Out of the world-renowned classical music department a project has emerged that is quickly proving to defy indie-album boundaries. The tale of the Matt Johnson Band and Matt’s breakthrough album “Horizon Line” is one worth retelling.

It all began in the Fall of 2003. Matt Johnson was just another music major amongst hundreds at St. Olaf. He spent his days studying music composition and his afternoons practicing with the varsity football and track teams. Each night Matt retreated to his room to pursue his dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. His collection of original songs grew and he decided to record a basic demo.

In a composition class that same fall, Matt met 20 year-old record studio owner, Paul Marino. It was instantly apparent to Matt that this young record producer/engineer had amazing talent and immeasurable potential. They began recording a demo at Paul’s Xeojax Production Studios in April of 2003, but as the project developed, the young musicians soon realized the promise in a full-length album.

Xeojax adopted Matt’s album as their first EP project. Various studio musicians began recording with Matt in 2003-2004 and soon he met Jeremy Anderson (drums), Chris Bakken (bass), Joey Kantor (keyboards), and Bobby Klein (guitar) to form the Matt Johnson Band. The extraordinary musicians began writing and recording the second half of the album together capitalizing on the creative potential that had already begun.

As the project expanded, so did Matt’s musical dream. He wanted to apply his interests in composition and film scoring to an already large project. Matt worked quickly to orchestra four tracks and the talented St. Olaf community pulled together to assemble a studio symphony orchestra. In January 2005 the orchestra recorded at Pachyderm Studios, MN with Dark Horse Studio engineer, Joseph Logsden sharing his expertise with the Xeojax staff. With the album nearing completion, the unique project gained the attention of Grammy-award winning mastering engineer, Gary Hedden of Nashville (Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Gloria Estefan). Mr. Hedden placed the crucial finishing touches on an indie-album that has pioneered new ground being written, orchestrated, recorded, engineered, and produced almost entirely by college students.

Although Matt’s dream began solo, five close friends known as the Matt Johnson Band now share it. Their broad musical backgrounds have created a diverse album that uniquely combines elements of rock, jazz, funk, blues, and pop. They look to the future with eager eyes as their writing continues to evolve and their improv-filled live performances electrify audiences throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul region.

Future engagements include opening for Nickel Creek and a 2005 summer tour. Visit www.mattjmusic.com for more info on Horizon Line, upcoming shows, booking, free music, and more!
