Matt Macaulay has been making music since childhood. Macaulay has always felt a pull towards songwriting and began writing lyrics and singing while studying jazz guitar in college. The result is lyrically driven rock music that incorporates elements of modern jazz harmony and improvisation.
What Im trying to do [with music] is combine the lyrical power of the singer/songwriter with the experimentation found in modern jazz and avant-garde.
Drawing influences from such diverse musicians as Ani Difranco, Eliott Smith, Jim Black, Jim O'rourke and Brian Blade, Macaulay writes distinctly personal songs that blur the lines of his favorite musical genres.
Ive always craved music that revolves around extremely personal and honest lyrics but at the same time I love improvisation and musicians who are trying to find new sounds. I think songwriting is all about searching for truth and finding new ways to express it."
Matt Macaulay and his band are currently playing NYC area clubs, in support of his self-titled debut EP.
