Hailing from Nova Scotia, Matt Mays & El Torpedo released their self-titled album in March 2005 made up of songs filled with empty highways and broken hearts. Their latest, Terminal Romance, is another stellar collection of rock riffage produced with Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy).

Biography

Matt Mays & El Torpedo (MM&ET) return with Terminal Romance, the brilliant follow up to 2005’s breakthrough self-titled debut. Terminal Romance was recorded in England with producer Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, The Tragically Hip) and mixed in Vancouver with Mike Fraser (AC/DC) with a few sessions home in Halifax thrown in along the way. The album’s first single “Tall Trees” is already Top 20 at Canadian Rock Radio.

The album is a huge leap forward, both in terms of Mays’ song writing and the band’s musical chops. Creating a cohesive whole from diverse influences…the Who-like bombast of “Building a Boat”, the retro eighties vibes of “Digital Eyes”, the Crazy Horse chug-a-lug of “Tall Trees”, the punk snarl of “Rock Ranger Record” and the epic E-Street band workout of the title track… and that’s just the first half! Influences aside, it’s all MM&ET and it’s all good.

MM&ET consists of Matt Mays (guitar, vocals), Jay Smith (guitar, vocals), Andy Patil (bass, vocals), and Tim Jim Baker (drums). Since forming in 2003 to perform shows in support of May’s self-titled JUNO nominated debut, the band has toured Canada countless times as well as performed numerous dates in the US and the UK.

The band’s self-titled album was released in Canada on Sonic Records in 2005 and a year later in the US on the 00.02.59 imprint. The debut was co-produced by the band and Grammy Award-winner Don Smith (Tom Petty, Keith Richards). The first single “Cocaine Cowgirl” was a massive hit and the album went on to win four East Coast Music Awards in 2006 (Album of the Year, Group of the Year, Rock Recording of the Year, Single of the Year).

Mays followed up the success of the Matt Mays & El Torpedo album by producing the When the Angels Make Contact soundtrack album with Baker. The project was an adventurous exploration of Matt and Tim’s many musical influences and went on to receive rave reviews and two JUNO nominations.

Stand Down At Sundown

Long live the powers now,
that bring down the rays,
Never let your days go for free.
You’ve got nerves swerving everywhere,
whatcha’ gonna do?
The ocean aint blue cause’ of you.

You’re an idiot man,
You got no soul,
I’ve got no faith in you.
I can’t believe some fall for what you do.
Stealing smiles from everyone’s faces,
tell me just what’s your deal?
I can’t imagine how you must feel.

The sun will come back again tomorrow,
If you leave and take your sorrow,
Stand down at sun down,
get yourself gone,
From now on.

Hey there pretty, desertfoot companion,
When are you coming home?
It’s been 300 nights,
And I’m mad.

It aint right, It aint right,
Your frontline days are done.
It’s been 300 nights,
And I’m sad.

The sun will come back tomorrow,
We don’t need all your sorrow,
Stand down at sundown,
get yourself gone,
From now on.

Travellin’

Goodbye girl. Gone to see the world,
Out to see everything but me.
Your letters aint coming that much any more,
Your letters aint coming at all.

I’ve been to Memphis; I’ve been to Rome,
But because you were here, I came back home.
Now I’m not trying to place any blame,
But I came back for you now I’d expect you do the same.

Travellin’, travellin’ so, so far away
If your comin’ home.
You’d better leave now,
You better leave now.

Good-bye girl gone to see the world,
Out to see every thing you choose
Now it’s becoming so clear
That your feet are planted deep
In your travellin’ shoes

Travellin’, travellin’ so, so far away
If your comin’ home.
You’d better leave now,
You better leave now.

Cocaine Cowgirl

Looking back on the chapters of your life
Searching for the storyline
‘Cuz the one you live now’s doing nothing for you
Say goodbye to your friends and the ones who love you.
Movin’ On

JJ’s song has been pushing you along
Gypsy man on a one night stand
Moving through the night far from the lights
On an asphalt path
Driftin’ over the white line
Gypsy man nobody knows

Cocaine Cowgirl
She’s out catchin’ eyes
On the other end of the desert skies
Takin’ you down to the dark side of town (a dark side of town)
Cocaine Cowgirl nobody knows

Lookin’ back through the chapters of your life
Searching for the storyline
‘cuz any line is a good time for you
living what the world’s been writing for you
Cocaine Cowgirl nobody knows
‘cuz any line is a good time for you
living what the world has written for you
Gypsy man that nobody knows
‘cuz any line is a good time for you
living what the world has written for you
Cocaine Cowgirl nobody knows

The Plan

Oh darlin’ I feel your pain
And the summer rain in your eyes
I'm desperately trying to get the blue back into your sky

And darlin’ I’ve been dreamin’ of you
Have you been praying for me?
As I cast my mind & soul
To the sea

I’ve got a plan
That will get us through
I’ve got a plan

I spend my days counting counterfeit
That will slip on through
For me it’s all about you

I’ve got a plan
That will get us through
I’ve got a plan

Oh darlin’ I feel your pain
And the summer rain in your eyes
I'm desperately trying to get the blue back into your sky

I’ve got a plan
That will get us through
I’ve got a plan
Oh darlin’ I feel your pain

Ain’t So Heavy

My heart is broken bad and the circus is in town
I’m out for a walk
Trying to shake these feelings down
When the sky is getting darker over the land
Things are looking better to me
Ever since I’ve been set free everything ain’t so heavy

Well this night is feelin’ good
And it’s swingin’ my mood around
Everyone’s out havin’ fun all around this town
I can see the drunks staggerin’ by
One points to the stars and says to me
“man, ever since I’ve been set free
everything ain’t so heavy”

well my heart is broken bad and the circus is in town
I’m out for a walk
Trying to shake these feelings down
Watchin’ the weather take a turn
Feels like it’s changin’ for me
‘cause ever since I’ve been set free everything ain’t so heavy
Ever since I’ve been set free everything ain’t so heavy
Oh, ever since I’ve been set free everything ain’t so heavy

St. George’s Lane

She grew up on St. George’s Lane
She drove slow and had a pretty fast backhand
She always hated it when it rained
It started out on St. George’s Lane

Her mother drove a station wagon
It smelled like cigarettes and sand
Until we got it all cracked up on five corners
We don’t drive too much anymore

Blue days & black nights
Back in a time when everything was right
Blue days & black nights

I took a bus down from Soul Harbour
Just to see the trophies she had won
Her father said she was gonna go pro
So don’t you get too close to her
No, don’t you get too close to her

Blue days & black nights
Back in a time when everything was right
Blue days & black nights
(Back in a time)

She grew up on St. George’s La

Tall Trees

Written By: Matt Mays

Young leaves from a seed there was sown
Two hundred years in the ground
Tall trees hanging over the road
Feels like they're staring me down

It's in the way that they sway
It's the feeling I get
they just don't want me around
Tall trees hanging over the road
feels like they're staring me down

"Who's going to love you when I'm gone?"
Said the leaf to the limb
"I'll get over you in a while
and find somebody new in the spring"

When the sun melts the snow
and the water runs down
To where the long river flows
Can I lay with you Jesse in the grass tonight and watch them grow?

Think of the way things might have been
And gimme a ride downtown
Tall trees hanging over the road
feels like they're staring me down

Terminal Romance

Written By: Matt Mays

Broke the winter’s back
And split for the Sun
Shot through the night from a frozen gun
With my eyes to the skies
And one foot to the ground
I really gotta’ go
…Away
--
It’s a rough n’ tumble come down at the break of day
Sitting here staring out across the bay
With that sunrise in your eyes
There’s never really too much to say
But I really gotta’ go.
…Away
--
Cause heartbreaks are uncurable
And I’m up all night
Stone-faced in New York City
Trying to set things right
--
She talks with her hands and she’s saying goodbye
Nobody’s gonna’ tell me why
They just say time, time heals all
But I don’t believe them
--
Cause heartbreaks are uncurable
And I’m up all night
Stone-faced in New York City
Trying to set things right
--
Now time rolls on religiously, swift and sly
Bullet train full of souls riding through the night
Everyone thinks they can slow it down
I used to be like that before I knew you
--
There ain’t nothing as dead as a dead romance
Nothing more alive than the city tonight
Storefront windows reflecting me
Where my steel cut heart can feel the electricity
Look at me now, whose gonna’ take me there
From this lighting and the thunder and you, the eighth wonder
--
She talks with her hands and she’s saying goodbye
Nobody’s gonna’ tell me why
They just say time, time heals all
But I don’t, I don’t, I don’t believe them
--
Cause heartbreaks are uncurable
And I’m up all night
Stone-faced in New York City
Trying to set things right (repeat)
--
Look at me now, whose gonna’ take me there
From this lighting and the thunder and you, the eighth wonder
--
She sang rock n’ roll with the devil
