"Matt Thompson Presents New Album ‘Accelerate’"

Accelerate, the Matt Thompson album, suggests momentum and picking up speed. The project’s song of the same name has one of the album’s poppiest arrangements. It bubbles and buzzes all the way through. Thompson has one of these vocal tones, though, that always seems to suggest that all’s not well – even when singing over such a forward motion-mirroring arrangement. In fact, an accurate comparison might be the music of Depeche Mode. Yes, Depeche Mode was/is an electronic music innovators. However, shortly after bursting on the scene, that English act’s music started to take a dark turn and has remained in that dark place ever since. Similarly, Thompson’s release opens with “Devil’s Dance” (An appropriate title, right?), and then moves and grooves with a kind of black celebration the rest of the way through. - Skope Magazine

"Accelerate – Matt Thompson (reviewed by Dave Franklin)"

Accelerate is an excellent weather gauge of what is happening in music today. Tastes come and go, fashion changes, the zeitgeist having writ, moves on. But this ever-moving scene is excellent for the shrewd creative, giving them a fluid and flexible sonic palette to paint their musical patterns. Accelerate is the sound of this in action.

There is a dark, alternative pop vibe at the album’s core, but the other sounds and styles he infuses it with make all the difference. The opener, Devil’s Dance, blends skittering trap beats with accessibility and atmosphere; Mean To Me feels like the dark underbelly of R&B, Glimmer is a hushed, haunted ballad, and the title track wanders between epic crescendoes and hushed tones. - Dancing About Architecture

"INTERVIEW: Matt Thompson"

Hi Matt, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! I’ve been doing great. Everything’s been crazy busy since the album came out, but all good stuff. Thank you for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Devil’s Dance?” Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
“Devil’s Dance” is about a situationship I had a few years back. I went into it knowing that it wasn’t going to last but the other guy fell very fast and hard. I did a lot of self-sabotaging in relationships back in the day. Originally when I wrote it in 2020, I didn’t want to put the song out, which now I’m extremely glad I did. At the time I wasn’t connecting super hard to it, but one of my best friends (shoutout to Vanessa) convinced me that I was crazy and this was THE SONG. - Vents Magazine
