Matt Tonks writes and performs songs all over the place. Upside, downside, backwards, frontways, and then some. Syd Green is Matt's right and left hand man, on drums and dobro guitar. Together they create a mesmerising, looping, close to the bone stream of unexpected sound. Matt's first solo album, Synaesthesia, was recorded and co-produced by Matt and Syd, with James Fletcher on bass & wurlitzer, in a farmhouse in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
Matt Tonks has gained a deserved reputation of being amongst Australia's finest performing and song writing talents.
Winner of the MusicOz Best Alternative Artist Award 2006, and finalist for APRA Songwriter of the Year, and Artist of the Year.
Matt's profile is quickly rising, with tracks from his album Synaesthesia receiving national radio play from Triple J, Nova, Triple M, 106.9FM, Vega FM, FBI, 4ZZZ, ABC Radio National and ABC 666, and Album of the Week on numerous community radio stations around Australia. As well as appearances at the Peats Ridge Festival, The Surry Hills Festival, Coast Fest, etc, Matt has played over 90 shows throughout the United Kingdom during two successful tours, including The Mean Fiddler, The Borderline, and local festivals.
Channel 10 News recently invited Matt to appear on Tim Bailey's segment as an emerging independent artist. Matt will feature regularly on Channel 10 News due to the overwhelming reaction from this first appearance.
In his recent interview with Triple J's Caroline Tran, Lior named Matt Tonks as the artist to watch in 2007 (aired on Triple J's Home & Hosed program, August '06.)
