Matt Vucic

The Bull And I is the slick, eclectic debut album from drummer / songwriter / producer Matt Vucic. (Pronounced view-sick). Combining Rock, Soul, and African styles, Matt has created a contemporary collection of songs that move the listener along much like a film score.

Originally from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Matt has spent the last 13 years living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has had the opportunity to work with many talented artists, whether in the recording studio or on the road touring. Liz Berlin, a solo artist who was a part of acclaimed National act Rusted Root called on Matt’s extraordinary drum talents on her recent release “AudioBioGraphical”. He also tours with her. Mr. Small’s Funhouse (Theater and recording studio, Pittsburgh PA) has become Matt’s second home where he is consistently called upon for his expertise in recording, production, and live performances. Matt has played drums with Mark Dignam (Folk singer/songwriter) and has recorded with bass player / songwriter / producer Benjy Myaz (Rhythm Kings Band, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, and Solo Artist). He was a co-founder of the Yves Jean Band (Rock), touring extensively and recording drums on two of the bands albums - Been Many Days Empty and Rise above Your Surroundings. With these and various other projects, Matt has become a multifaceted talent in music, and his skill shines on his debut album.

“As a drummer, I was fortunate to be exposed to some of the best musicians and music instructors in central Pennsylvania. They taught me the importance of the fundamentals in music and discipline. . I owe so much to them. They helped shape who I am", Matt says. His influences as a musician run the gamut from Bob Dylan to Miles Davis to film score composers to the heart and soul of R&B and Funk James Brown. As a songwriter, Matt recognizes a different influence as well. “I didn’t realize the impact that my parents had on me as a songwriter until later in life. All the James Taylor, Crosby Stills and Nash, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and U2 they had me listening to has surfaced and is shaping my career, I realize that now. When I was growing up….all that really mattered was drums.”

The Bull And I is not a “drummer’s” album. The focus of the record is not to show off drum chops. Its strength lies in the songwriting, musicianship, production, and rhythm. “If I had to pick the biggest influence for The Bull And I, I would pick Paul Simon. Listen closely, Paul Simon’s influence is all over that record.” Matt enlisted top-flight musicians for the project and created an opportunity for them to work their musical magic. The ethereal Jody Abbott (Squonk opera, Solo artist) and the soulful Bruce Harris (Studio artist) are featured vocalists. Along with bass player Anthony Pecora (Mandrake Project, Studio musician), guitarist Jon Check (Songwriter) and sax player Jason May (Doctor Zoot, Studio musician) Matt leads the listener along with strong, “in-the-pocket” rhythms and atmospheric melody from beginning to end.

“I’m proud of The Bull And I. It was my first attempt at songwriting, arranging, and producing and I think it turned out well. I also owe so much to the musicians that played on the album. But my eyes are always looking forward.”

Matt continues to write new material drawing on many influences of music. He also continues to hone his production skills with several different projects. With his new songs and many of the same musicians who recorded on this album, Matt has shifted his focus to creating a live show that will leave audiences wanting more.
