BandWorldReggae

I play a blend of real ska and folky punk on an acoustic guitar. I sing political and personal songs with heavy doses of sarcasm and humor. I would say my music is stylistically similar to Against Me and Chris Murray, with the attitude of NOFX. Plus I'm gay and everyone likes a minority. Except many

Biography

I'm firmly planted in the ska scene, and don't often try to promote myself elsewhere. The fact that I play an acoustic guitar and sing some punk songs makes me fit perfectly amongst "riot folk" singers and so on. Coming from a scene where bands typically have half a dozen members or more, I tend to stick out quite a bit. My music tends to sound like Against Me!'s punk (well, old Against Me!, anyway) blended with stripped down authentic ska. It's simple but energetic, and serves solely as a vessel to carry the lyrics. Lyrically I draw heavy influence from NOFX or, to go back a bit further, protest singer Phil Ochs. I try to be straightforward in describing my personal woes or philosophical ideas, but I'm also inclined to inject humor whenever possible. I guess I'm funny enough that people want to call me a comedian, but I don't tell jokes anymore than NOFX does. I love making people laugh, but it's humor based on substance and reality. Humor is engaging and it seems to temper the feel of the preaching I guess. I'm gay and I don't shy away from discussing it on stage or in song, and while I used to be rather depressed and angry, I've learned to channel that emotion into positivity. People have told me that I "stole the show" before, which I imagine isn't what you think of when you hear of a solo performer. For all of 2007 I was the keyboardist of CT-based ska-core act the Flaming Tsunamis. In that year I learned a lot about touring (having done one full national tour, three regional tours, and a three-week stint in the UK) and it taught me how to handle my own tours. I just completed a successful 3-week tour in July, and am looking for the right financial window to hit the road more often.

Lyrics

Uncivil Union

Written By: Matt Wixson

Different people, different laws
I think we tried that once
Do you remember Jim Crow?
Wasn't all that long ago
Different names for different folks
Punishment for different strokes
We're one way so we get this
You're like that so you get shit
We owe you nothing so be thankful for it

Deserve rights just like the rest
So why settle for less?
Separation, never fair
No matter how they compare
Sanctity don't mean a thing
It's just a fucking ring
It's the priveledges that count
Would you say with your own mouth
We stay in and everyone else will stay out

It doesn't seem legal, this treatment of people
The "liberal" side is saying separate but equal
But you know there's certain rights
That still won't be applied
But we're only 3 to 5 percent of voters
So why try?

Slouching Towards Washington (AKA The Day I Blew Up America)

Written By: Matt Wixson

Everybody vote for me for President
I'm gonna be the shit
I'll press the button yeah I swear
And blow us all to little bitty pieces
That nobody will ever recognize
Atheists and evangelicals alike will all be vaporized
I think that's just what America
Needs to do away with this hysteria
Because fifty-one percent believe people were sent
From the heavens, created by God
Well if he exists can you tell me the reason
For harlequin babies or My Chemical Romance?

I'll get an interview with O'reily
And this is what he'll say:
Your everything the liberals would like to be
You're a gay commie tree-hugging
Traitor who loves to kill fetuses
You're a anti-semite who would like
To kill Israelis on their buses
And I would smile when I say to him
Would you like some freedom fries with your uranium?
And then I'd nuke the station cuz I'd be miles away from
Them and they agreed to do the interview
Live via satellite, I was their only guest tonight
The producer would be fired if he hadn't just been charred

There is no reason to cover it up
Control Alt Delete cuz the country is fucked
Eliminate all the problems we got
And everybody everybody everybody everybody
Everybody everybody everybody's gonna fucking die

And then we can start all over
And then we can start all over
And then we can start all over

(We did some nice things, American dreams
A new shopping mall and a plasma tv
Inflatable bullshit on our lawns
Singing American Idol songs
A ribbon magnet on the back of our trucks
Lets all passersby know that we give a fuck)

And then we can start a World War 3 4 5 6 6 6 boom

Fuck the Economy, Stupid!

Written By: Matt Wixson

How much money is enough
To make you never give a fuck
You're selfish but it's normal so why question?
Disregard those equal rights
Cuz have you seen the rising price
Of gas around the corner at the station

Everybody's got their causes, but nothing else affects us as a whole
The wallet's all that matters, so please don't get distracted from the goal

Fix up the economy
And nevermind equality
The money always supercedes the morals
And while we're at it, maybe we
Should reestablish slavery
We'd finally beat Asia with cheap labor

A couple hundred dollars would be enough to make me smile wide
The fact that there's disparity could never hurt my patriotic pride

It's not diabolical, just economical, sociological stain
I'll vote for the guy who will make me the richest
So long may the dollar reign

Good American

Written By: Matt Wixson

Well I got my bumper sticker
From the 700 Club
Situated on the rear gate
Of my Ford Expedition
It says that marriage equals
One woman and one man
It's right next to the sticker
That says we should boycott France

And that's ok if you don't agree
You're gonna have to pay the price eternally
Because the enemies of the USA, you see
Will burn. In. Heck.

But not me, I'm a good American
When I drive my SUV anywhere I can
Show off America's place inside my heart
When I stop in the Wal*Mart parking lot
Just a little crooked taking up two parking spots
The other shoppers know I am doing my part

I got an oval sticker
That says Bush/Cheney '04
And a tattered rag of an American flag
Flying from my driver's side door
I also got a ribbon magnet
It boldly says "Support Our Troops"
Because they can't come back yet from Iraq
Until they find those stinkin' nukes!

And that's ok if you don't agree
You're gonna have to pay the price eternally
Because the enemies of the USA, you see
Will burn. In. Heck.

But not me, I'm a good American
When I drive my SUV anywhere I can
Show off America's place inside my heart
When I stop in the Wal*Mart parking lot
Just a little crooked taking up two parking spots
The other shoppers know I am doing my part

Kick in the D

Written By: Matt Wixson

When the one you adore
Won't give you the time of day
I say BABY ain't that a kick in the D?
Do it all, do your best
It's up to them to do the rest
But you might find out
It isn't meant to be

When the check from your work
Starts to feel like all that you're worth
I say BABY ain't that a kick in the D?
Get moving, get bold
You don't have to feel so old
And you will satisfy your soul
Eventually

When the path that you walk
Leaves you stuck waist deep in the shit
I say BABY ain't that a kick in the D?
Stay focused, stay clear
You're not destined to stay here
You must push through
And you will soon be free

Black on Black

Written By: Matt Wixson

Roaming through the streets, Converse on our feet
Looking for the ever so exciting chance to beat an emo
Wearing only black, better watch your back
Sick up upping punx so we're going to attack an emo
We'll be thrashing you with every move that we know
Till you give that stupid shit back to the Gringos

Everyone's the same, sad and always lame
You like punk as well except that yours goes by the name of emo
Sits alone and cries, liner on the eyes
The only word that summarizes all that I despise is emo
Yeah if I was you I'd be on pins and needles
No we're never gonna share vegan burritos

With you and me, there is no unity
Respect my scene superiority
The color of your Taking Back Sunday tee
The same as mine from the Dead Kennedys

The underground has come to this
Black shirt on black shirt violence

Set List

My typical set is around 30 minutes, but because of my large collection of songs, I have headlined shows with hour-long (or longer) sets. A half-hour set is usually nine songs. The setlist varies greatly depending on location, crowd size, feel of show, etc. If it's a political environment, I'm more likely to play more political songs. If it's an area I've been playing for years, I'm more likely to pull out older favorites for the old fans. If the crowd is participatory, I'll include more singalongs. I'm very versatile.
