Still working on that hot first release.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Growing up in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Matty Rose began performing at the age of seven, in talent contests, plays, and wherever there was a stage. After an impaired driving accident, Matty struggled with some personal demons and set out on a path destined for destruction — however, five years later, still with some figurative bumps and bruises, he found himself opening for legendary rocker David Wilcox in a sold-out show in St. John’s. Matty acknowledges his slip-ups, but has turned them around into inspiration for his music.
Matty released an EP, “Travelling Man,” in 2014 and earned himself air play across Canada and in Ireland, more than 20,000 YouTube plays and 10,000 web downloads of the recording, as well as an identity as a solid country music performer. Matty is now set to release his debut full-length solo recording, “Born a Rolling Stone,” this year. The album was inspired by some of Matty’s struggles, as well as some good times: the title track was written for his mother, whom he says has stuck with him through thick and thin. “1993” was written about his biological father.
“Country music lets you tell a story, and I’ve had lots of them, that’s for sure,” Matty says.
Matty has connected with Nashville fiddler Lauren Conklin (who has worked with acts like Lonestar and Montgomery Gentry), and she has helped open doors for him down south. In the coming months, Matty will tour eastern Canada and make his way down to Nashville, before coming home for some gigs around the island.
Controversy, love, hate, and good tunes — isn’t that what country music has always been about?
