Music has been in Matty Ryce’s soul since he was a small child. At the ripe old age of two his parents captured him on cassette tape (oh the days before CDs and MP3s) naming current tunes. In his high school days he was often given a piece of paper and the responsibility for coming up with a play-list for dances. Although, if you asked him back then he wouldn’t have told you when he grew up he would be making his living as a successful DJ. It wasn’t until after completing a university degree program in Kinesiology that he would have a brush with manning the wheels of steel at a house party early one morning; this would have a profound effect on him. Being a fan of the party scene and flirting with the idea of being a ‘DJ’ this brief experience at the house party planted a seed that finally came to fruition a few years later.

Getting his baptism by fire by jumping into the DJ game at Remy’s in Yorkville during the summer of '07, Matty has been going full steam ahead ever since. His outgoing personality on and off the decks has led him to weekly residencies at Remy’s, Li’ly Resto-Lounge, Kool Lounge as well as Fly Nightclub, Straight Boutique, Fuzion Garden & Resto-Lounge, Riva Supper Lounge, Caren's Wine & Cheese Bar; including a number of one-offs as well as several charity events. Due to his growing popularity he has been invited to appear at a number of Toronto hot spots in addition to a full booking for Toronto's annual Pride Festival. This journey has led Matty to work with the likes of Deko-Ze, Kenny Glasgow, Simon Jain, Sydney Blu and Addy as well as NYC legend Frankie Feliciano and international talents Juanjo Martin and Paul Heron to name a few. However, it’s not all about DJ-ing, as he is currently working as a producer in a blossoming production house specializing in music CD’s for the niche fitness market.

Matty has a sincere appreciation for a variety of musical genres. Depending on his mood and the venue his set reflects this. “It’s all about the vocals,” he says, “...not that I have anything against tracks without them, it’s just that I love vocals.” Whether it’s deep soulful house, funky Chicago style or banging electro, Matty rocks it in his own way - staying true to his love of vocals, often using interesting samples from a wide variety of genres including hip hop, R&B, rock and pop from all eras. His influences vary from Kaskade to Derrick Carter to Starkillers to Dennis Ferrer. “There’s just so much out there that gives me inspiration, it’s just awesome” Matty says, “there's times where I feel like there's just so much to play, but there's just not enough time in a set to do it.” Although he seems to be managing that quite well as he is getting a reputation for his track selection. Matty’s house has been known to get anyone and everyone on the dance floor – including your grandmother.

Matty Ryce is a rising star in the DJ scene. His talents have gone from the national to international level with bookings across Southern Ontario all the way to Norway. After a number of successful parties in which Matty rocked the Norwegians, he earned an international residency at the beautiful Nobilis in Oslo. After a very steady summer, Matty has been working on a promising fall/winter '09 and an even bigger and better 2010, which includes some more 'work-travel' with Montreal around the corner as well as San Francisco in the near future.
Stay tuned.
