Bio

Maurice Kirya is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and composer from Uganda, East Africa.

Kirya likes to call his music “fusion soul” because of his unique blend of African percussions and vocals with Western and Eastern influences, which give him his distinctive sound. Kirya sings in five (5) different languages, namely, English, Luganda, Swahili, Runyoro and Lugwere.

Kirya was born in a musical family; almost all his siblings are singers. He grew up singing in school choirs, gospel churches, and later joined non-governmental organizations, under which he has been involved in educating the youth about HIV/AIDS through music. He is also a trained youth counselor.

Kirya has had the opportunity to perform with Moussa Diallo (Mali), 2 Face Idibia (Nigeria) Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa), Indigenous (Belgium), Susanna Owiyo (Kenya), and A.Y (Tanzania) to name a few. He was also selected to perform the Uganda section of the East African Anthem, an honor which also saw him deliver a live performance for the President of Uganda at his house. Kirya has also collaborated with fellow artist Kawesa and International Hospital Kampala in a musical performance titled ‘Music with Heart’ to raise money for some of the first heart surgeries in Uganda. He has also opened for celebrated legendary South African jazz performer Jonathan Butler in Kampala.

Kirya has been nominated for a variety of awards including the Kora Awards in South Africa and the Kisima Awards in Kenya. He also won best R’n’B Pearl of Africa Music Award in Uganda. Kirya was invited to perform at the Sauti za Busara Music Festival in Zanzibar, which showcased over forty (40) artists from all over Africa and abroad. He was chosen the ninth favorite performer of the festival.

Kirya was recently chosen to perform for the BBC at their Faidika Na BBC function, where his hour-long performance was broadcasted live in the UK and Uganda.

Kirya is currently running a monthly showcase called The Maurice Kirya Experience, which showcases vocal, instrumental, poetic and visual artistic talent from around East Africa and beyond, every last Tuesday of the month.
