New Artist Showcase: Maveric

I love Maveric and you will too very soon, once you get to know him the way I do. I have been in the studio with Maveric plenty of times while he has been recording and although he doesn't always record a song in 1 or 2 takes, he's motivated to make it happen and for that I can respect him.

Maveric is a great person to showcase for our New Artist section because not only is he an upcoming show stopping new artist but because he is a hardworker (yes a rapper with a day job- OMG- that is possible) and he is a family man (a rapper who is also a good father- wow). He writes all of his songs and he is hungry for more and ready to take the food out of anyone's mouth who is ready to contend against him.

Maveric is also one of my favorite new artist because he was the first one to feature me on a track. Yes, on Brooklyn B's, I am the one who says, "Please say the baby." At that moment, I began to respect the grind and realized that going behind the booth especially in front of Faculty Recordings' (his label who is also an indie label)staff is not an easy task. I messed up doing it twice but Vance, the CEO and engineer claimed that it took me six times based on the pro tools session (something I am still debating til this day).

Anyway, I must admit this showcase has been a long time coming and it wasn't easy for Mav to explain in words some of the questions I asked but a shocking email was the twist of his destiny and made me respect his gangster a little more. Now sit back and relax and welcome to the world of Maveric...

"My Rap Style is versatile. You cant pinpoint me to anyone."

Verse 1: The Autobiography

A quarter. A Tape. A person. What do these three things have in common? There are two sides to each of them. Each with their own personality. Each with their
style. Each with their own inner demons. This is the case with Faculty Recordings first act: Antwane McClain, better known as Maveric.

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Maveric is in a constant struggle to separate himself from being just the next rapper from New York. Or better yet, the next rapper from the mecca of rappers, Brooklyn. His style is definitely unique, and his flow almost as fluid as Niagara Falls. But then again, you would be foolish to expect
anything less. But to fully understand who this Maveric character is, you must first know who Antwane McClain is.

Unlike most rappers, Antwane McClain was not the product of a broken household, fatherless household,or for that matter, no household. This is where Antwane begins to distance himself from your typical rapper. It appears to be an unwritten law that states that in order to be a successful rapper; you must first not have a father and be subjected to scenes that are in reality nonexistent to most. This is demon
number one for Maveric; he has to prove that the lyrical content in your raps should stand for something the way it used to, and not how many bodies you have bagged.

In an attempt to break those stereotypes that are instilled within the veins of hip-hop, Maveric sought and found the ultimate medium to aid in getting his message across; that medium being Faculty Recordings. With the help of the Faculty Family and his own lyrical abilities, Maveric is out to prove that he should be heard. That he is what the game is missing. Will everything work out the way Mav wants it to? Only time will tell until then Maveric is here and the Faculty is where he stays!

Verse 2: The Struggle
Maveric, who is from the 90's in Flatbush, got serious about rapping when he was only 19-years-old. He had a tape that he passed around in college (Sullivan County Community College) to get the buzz going. He gave it out for free in the dorms.

Before the Faculty, he was with a "paper label" for a year and a half. During that time, he had promoted himself and achieved being on Whats Really Hood DVD, a European Magazine, and he won a couple of showcases. He went and got his name out there. Maveric believes that his stage presence and performance created a underground buzz.

His reactions to his new label:
"We just started and they work you to death," he says. "You thought you were the shit until you came here."

What does Maveric feel is his strength in the rap game?
"My strength is my writing ability. I can write a whole song."

Any Weaknesses Mav?
"Sometimes I slack a little bit, shit don't come out they way it should."

Maveric said something to me during his interview that really intrigued me. He said that it is hard to get motivated while trying to record a song because there is nothing really out to listen to and there is nothing really inspirational out there. He says he really has to listen to old music to get really out there.

Maveric's Favorite Artist: Nas because he has a message in his songs and Common because of his lyrical ability.

Maveric's Personal Life:
In case you do not know Maveric is a father. He has a beautiful son. Here is his reaction to him being a father.

"When my son was born, I felt good. Fatherhood brings you into manhood. Now you have responsibility. You have to be a role model. You have to watch what you say."

Before we end this interview. I would like to disclose an email that Maveric wrote to our offices so that we can get a very good view of who he really is...

A Talk Dat Ish Exclusive:
The email that changed my view on Maveric:

To know Maveric & Antwane as an artist & human being u need more than 2 days to define me as a person & emcee. I'm quite aware of my abilities and what I need to work on, but as an artist such as myself who has been out there, who has done numerous shows, dvd appearances, won showcases, etc.

To answer your questions the one thing that makes maveric tick as an artist, a father , a person, and a humanitarian is to be better than what I was the day before. I want to be recognized not only as person who can put words to paper, but as a person who put back in his community, who opened doors for others, who put his family in a better living situation, who silenced all his critics, who achieved all his dreams that was once thought to be impossible to achieve and much more..I also want my son to be proud to say antwane a.k.a maveric is my father and say it with his head high even if I don't make it into the music biz (which I know i will) My determination to succeed alone is enough to make me tick and wont stop even when the clock has stopped ticking!

U asked where do I see myself in the next 5, 10, 15 yrs. My ans to that is I see my self living comfortably having achieved all the success I ever imagined and more and just enjoying my wealth I have accumulated over those yrs, watching my investments grow and living life threw my kid/kids. Last but not least what individualizes me from every other dude thats doing the same thing is allot of these dudes are in it for a quick buck, quick stardom, and want to buy expensive whips jewelry etc..but with me I know & understand that all of that comes with the territory and in order to be really successful in the music biz u have to be more than just a rapper. cause like I told u rappers are broke! so I come in with the mentality of using my ability to rap as a stepping stone to fry the bigger fish(corporate America) and own my own business, invest in profitable ventures, and things that will keep a paycheck coming in other than from music. just to sum it up a music/business mogul.I hope u have gained a lil more insight on me and as time goes on u will learn allot more.

Wow, this is enough said. I was very impressed and I hope you are too. This boy's writing skills is great and I am so happy that I had the chance to interview him.
Verse 3: What's Next for Maveric?

Maveric is indeed a very smart man. He understands that most rappers are very broke and that they must invest the money.

In 5 years, Maveric would like to be the best rapper doing it. He would like to have a few multi-million dollar businesses. He hopes to invest in real estate and receive big revenue from it.

Next Year Maveric's Street Album will be out. He would not like to release the name. The date and everything will be announced later on. They are having a tough selection process and is working on new material as we speak.

Please contact our new artist on his Myspace page, www.myspace.com/maveric and please check out his label's new website which is coming soon www.facultyrecordings.com. Please check out his songs and let me know what you think.

Please support our new Artist and show him some love and remember to respect his mind and his grind. If you think you will be great for our new artist section, please email tionnatsmalls@yahoo.com and we will email you the questionnaire.

Thank You for reading and thanks Maveric for all your help with this showcase.
