"Maxine Kauter Ep Review"

Drum Media Tuesday 26 August 2008

"Every now and again Australia offers up a female musician that is able to combine a polished pop sound with a tougher rock edge from the Divinyls through to Little Birdy and the Howling Bells. Maxine Kauter is now part of this tradition. Though it's not particularly muscular rock, Kauter balances her ethereal vocals with her rhythm section's driving beats. You hear echoes of her training as a jazz guitarist, but the instrumentation is never overwhelming. Kauter's great talent is keeping things sparse and simple. "

"Sandpit Review"

Maxine Kauter and her deliciously gravely voice opened proceedings this evening. Armed only with and acoustic guitar, she showed off an enjoyable array of material, stripped back in the absence of her band. The performance was in a similar vein to Missy Higgins in the nicest way possible - simple, clean guitar and a memorable vocal delivery. And what a flawless voice Kauter has. Her songs showed off sublime personality and confident character and her delivery was charming. Kauter is obviously at ease on stage and covered Ani Difranco's Anticipate in a style to rival the original. A performer certainly deserving of a later, longer time slot - Drum Media

Bio

Sydney based singer/songwriter Maxine Kauter is a rarity. With just a few years on the local scene she has put together a repertoire of material that is at once arrestingly beautiful, familiar and enigmatic. An artist with her roots firmly in the folk genre, her songs are less story based and rely more on imagery with all the blank spaces left in.

After training briefly as a jazz guitarist (very briefly) she fled to the folkier, dirtier, more sensuous world of songwriting. Drawing on the musical musings of those such as Chrissy Hinde, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young she has developed music of stunningly simple beauty. Having put together a four-piece band, she delivers a powerfully engaging live show and have prompted comparisons with The Cowboy Junkies and Mazzy Star.

The band is David Hylton (Wormholes Exist) on guitar, Time Warner (Boy Meets Ground) on drums and local singer songwriter, Lucas J Hendriks (Stiff Gins) on bass. As a four piece they have been described as “mood makers” shifting audiences through hypnotic mantra-minimalist arrangements into rockabilly pop effortlessly and with startling finesse.

A relaxed and engaging live performer, Maxine has performed relentlessly over the past couple of years honing her song writing and live performance. This love of live performance and focused attention has seen the band take the stage at
a host of venues including The Basement, The Hopetoun, Spectrum and Will and Tobys. They have also been included in festival line-ups including eats Ridge Festival without the benefit of a professional recording.

In June 2008 Roughcut Music (Trial Kennedy, Evermore, Savage Garden) signed Maxine Kauter to an exclusive publishing deal, making her the sole female artist on their impressive roster. With Roughcut’s strong focus on developing the songwriter, 2008 is set to be a success for Maxine and the Maxine Kauter Band.

A Debut EP will be released in August 08.
