Bio

On any given day you can find Mike McCarry huddled around a pair of speakers paying perfect attention to everything pumping from inside them. You can find him with the windows down on the highway and the latest urban sound thundering from the stereo. You can find him sharing a drink with friends while The Boss gets in tune from the jukebox. Much to the dismay of his girlfriend, you can find him doing the domesticated thing with Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters. Or Sunday mornings accompanied by bowl of cereal and a audible dose of The Bitches Brew. Fact of the matter is that first and foremost, Mike is a student of both sound and composition.

With his 2006 release of the “sexdrugsrockandrollstuntsbluntshiphop EP” many new listeners are becoming accustomed to the sounds that have many industry insiders raving with reviews. The EP is a seven song effort that cumulates an incredible journey for the 22 year old artist, one that leads the listener through the life and times of one of Philadelphia’s newest and most promising acts.

Born in Meda, PA, music wasn’t always a paramount factor in Mike’s life. Most of his early years were spent competing and practicing for the sports and games that Mike loved so much. A vibrant and outstanding athlete, Mike participated and excelled in youth sports at every level. Eventually leading him to earn varsity letters and all county and all state considerations along with a college scholarship to play baseball.

In college, Mike’s interest to make music flourished. While stranded in the scarcely populated regions surrounding Scranton, PA, Mike began to develop his song writing abilities during long hours of downtime. Having written and preformed many songs at talent shows while growing up, Mike attempted to focus on recording an album while a freshman. Recruiting the help of a mutual friend, Mike found himself with the ability to use a recording studio for free for an afternoon. Without a recording engineer, or even another person to push record, Mike pounded out 13 songs in five hours. Saved them to a data disc and retreated back to his dorm room where he taught himself how to mix the songs. Despite having only minimal polish and clarity, the LP that he pressed on his dorm room went on to sell 2,700 copies in the Scranton area and land Mike on college radio as well as multiple stages on area campuses.

While still competing on a nationally ranked Baseball team, an area bookmaker approached Mike about financing his next musical effort. Excited about the possibility, Mike accepted the offer and solicited DJ Kno (witchdoctor, little scrappy) of cunninlynguists to executive produce the professionally done EP. While networking with producers such as Domingo (Eminem, Big Pun), Panik (Molemen), 9th wonder (Jay-z, Little Brother) and Danger Mouse (Gnarles Barkley, Grey Album), Mike created a line-up of producers that most independent artists can only dream.

Spending two weeks in recording, working side by side with a critically acclaimed producer greatly expanded Mike’s ideas and aspirations about music. As an English major in college, his ability to craft stories and images even within the most light hearted of songs have led many from outside the hip hop spectrum to take notice and listen. High school and college students alike find their stories accessible in his music, and his sound to merely be the vehicle that delivers the goods.

A man of many trades, from successful car salesman to lunch truck driver, Mike finds himself doing the ole 9-5 while finishing up school. Living with his beautiful girlfriend and his two cats, Mike is always planning his next line of attack on the music world. Currently, he’d like any opportunity that is put in front of him. Managers, tours, labels, distribution, which ever presents itself as a worthwhile opportunity, Mike will take notice. Until then, just listen to the music and hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as the countless fans that have discovered one of the best secretes still out there.
