Mcgowan

BandRock

Mcgowan has a gift for catchy melodies. A recent song he wrote with Ben Lee won Song Of the Year at the Austalian Aria Awards (Grammy equiv.) Mcgowan's an all-american boy, a true story of a farm boy making his way in the big city. His lyrics are always hopeful and the girls love him...

Biography

Describing the road to his own music, Mcgowan notes, "I grew up with folk and classical music on NPR. I was about 5 or 6 when I heard the Beatles and the Stones and my little world caved in to rock and roll. Later there was a long period of listening to reggae - lots of Marley - he was a major force, musically and spiritually." This led Mcgowan to teenage rock band, Christopherís Pocket, bringing him from rural New Hampshire to Philadelphia - his home prior to New York. After the Pocket folded in early 1999, Mcgowan turned to guitar-for-hire at studio sessions to pay the bills, but also realized he could and should step out and start singing his own songs. He built a following by playing coffeehouses and clubs from Boston to Baltimore, and found himself with thousands of myspace.com friends.

A break from Mcgowan's own music came in 2002 when he joined Ben Lee's band, touring the world, making the late night TV rounds, playing shows with Beck and Phantom Planet, and also co-writing and recording on Ben's Awake is the New Sleep album. The subsequent collaboration with Ben on “Catch My Disease” resulted in it winning Single of the Year at the Australian version of the Grammyís, the ARIAís, in November 2005.

It was during his two-year excursion with Ben that Mcgowan took a detour to Philadelphia-based drummer/engineer/producer Jesse Honig's temporary home in St. Louis. The two produced nearly 30 tracks over the course of two long weekends, capturing a restless spirit with intimate and inspired recordings that bring you into the makeshift living room studio where they recorded. The duo feverishly tracked guitars, drums, bass, keys, vox, loops – mixing a veritable kitchen sink into shape – working quickly, nearly instinctively – and creating the most perfect pop of their young careers. Their recordings eventually become the album Mcgowan .

"There's a lot of punk and soul in my head," says Mcgowan of his sound. "I like spacey music and psychedelic sounds. In the past Iíve had to front with an acoustic guitar, which means I rely heavily on the craft of pop songs to fill the sonic void. I'm excited for the album 'cause I think it is going to reflect a lot of elements that people don't always get to hear from me." To date, most McGowan material has been available through his Web site only. That will change with the release of Mcgowan on Manic Pop Thrill. The album is available at iTunes in the USA, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan. It is also available from Dot Shop Records throughout Scandinavia at www.dotshop.se.

Capable of touring with a band or as a solo artist, Mcgowan is preparing to spend 2006 doing both. He will start in New York City and as a result of his new deal with BMG Music Publishing in Australia will be touring there in early 2006.

Lyrics

Half Of Me

Written By: Mcgowan Southworth

I woke up feeling like an awful mess I was looking down i was feeling useless
I tried to tell you that i couldn't pretend you don't hear me out you don't even listen
What does it mean? It's like everywhere but in-between
How does it feel? Like i can't get hold of the driving wheel

Turn it Around - You'll See - When I Give You Half Of Me
Your Gonna Cry - Envy - When I Give You Half Of Me

I saw your picture in a magazine you were looking high you were playing the queen
You said the easy life would never end I said come on baby who you foolin'?
What would you do - when your tongue gets tied and the tide gets you?
Who would you call? Well i know i'd be the last of all

Turn it Around - You'll See - When I Give You Half Of Me
Your Gonna Cry - Envy - When i Give You Half Of Me

And now i'm seeing things i didn't before I've been looking out i've been looking for more
I come correct on that you didn't respect i'm not a gun for hire i don't play for paychecks
What would you say - if you're plans don't go your every way?
How would you deal? You can touch and hear but you can feel... and you can't hold on, no you can hold on.

Turn It Around, You'll See, When I Give You Half Of Me
Your Gonna Cry, Envy, When i Give You Half Of Me

Beautiful Day

Written By: Mcgowan Southworth

Such a beautiful day to be wasted.
Such a beautiful girl to be wasted.
Oh my love, we could stay here - or go outside and look around

Once, when the sky was blue
Once, there was only you
Once, we could meet half way
Nothing was in our way. Was a beautiful day. Beautiful Day.

Such a beautiful girl to be wasted
Say goodbye to the world, it's been wasted.
But in my arms, you could save me - as all our troubles slip on by.

Once, when the sky was blue
Once, there was only you
Once, we could meet half way
Nothing was in our way. Was a beautiful day. Beautiful Day.

If this is love that i have tasted, the day is nothing - lay it wasted
Desperation has it's youth but we stuck together, stuck together - all the way
to a Beautiful Day.

Once, when the sky was blue
Once, there was only you
Once, we could meet half way
Nothing was in our way. Was a beautiful day, a Beautiful Day.

Millions

Written By: Mcgowan Southworth, Dave Tozer

Is it over when you get your ass kicked? Looking back it seems we may have asked for it.
A simple lie, left me thinking that i had the truth, when i'd do anything you'd ask me to.

It's just that millions, don't care. It's just that millions don't care.

You ask me how can people be so plastic? Once again it seems we may have asked for it.
You lost your faith, and this i've truly known - cause i have lost my faith a time or two
yes i have had my faithless fazes too.

It's just that millions, don't care. It's just that millions don't care.
Is it easy, lord, to forget about me?

Half of the when there, i stumbled on a stone - my mind was blown, my mind was blown
And on the way down, i see blue saline trees - they're laughing at you - they're laughing at me

It's just that millions, don't care. it's just that millions don't care.
Is it easy, lord, to forget about me?
