Bio

Mental Elastic Dynasty, a hip-hop group hailing from Kalamazoo, MI, was formed when member The Mic Smith told his classmate Torben, in their high school lunchroom, that his raps were better than his. The rivalry quickly grew into a collaboration with brothers Anagram and Torben and, from then on, the three member group has continued to push each other creatively to make music that draws from their unique personalities and backgrounds. The Mic Smith, the son of a teacher, journeyed through literature and poetry before finally settling on hip-hop. Anagram and Torben were both raised backstage at the theater while their parents prepared for regular performances. Early recording sessions on a dual cassette karaoke over early Eminem and The Roots instrumentals slowly evolved into a music career.

Growing up in the nineties, the group has been influenced by artists like Outkast, E-40, Nas, Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, and contemporary musicians like Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, and Kendrick Lamar. Blending a diverse set of tastes that range from Miles Davis to Marvin Gaye, Mental Elastic Dynasty produce eclectic music that is both thought provoking and entertaining.

Thanks to their relationship with Mobb North Records, recent performances at SXSW and the ING New York City Marathon, as well as guest appearances with Sway on MTV’s “Rap Fix,” a nomination for “Freshman of the Week” and published interviews on mtvU, have begun to cement the group’s ascent in the music industry. Additionally, their singles have found a home on radio stations throughout the United States, Europe, and popular media outlets Allhiphop.com, OnSmash, and The Hip-Hop Chronicle UK.

Mental Elastic Dynasty is currently working on their forthcoming mixtape “There They Go!” and a European tour for summer 2012. To learn more about the group, please visit their website at www.mentalelastic.com and follow them on twitter @mentalelastic.
