"Track of the day: Mega Emotion’s ‘BRAINS’"

Straight-up indie anthem that oozes lo-fi charm and a kind of ball-kicking confidence that demands attention

Today's track is a lo-fi little gem from newcomers Mega Emotion. 'Brains' has everything you want from a ballsy, straightforward indie anthem. It lays on the bass, energises the synths and unleashes unholy hell when the chorus of 'BRAAAAAINS' kicks in with a crash of drums. If Hollywood executives ever consider a remake of Dan O'Bannon's Return of the Living Dead, this would have to be a part of the soundtrack.

Sounds like: A mad genetic experiment between Casiokids and Blondie. - Click Music

"Names to Watch"

Mega Emotion aren’t your standard synth-pop proposition. They may weave webs of slick electro beats that nod out to Blondie, but they also have a thing for excessive layers of noise. The illusive and unexpected turns their music takes is perfectly illustrated in their one and only demo, ‘Brains’, which you can listen to below. - The Fly

"Single of the Week"

Mega Emotion - 'BRAINS'

The best thing about being Music Editor of a popular website is being sent music. All I want to do with my time is listen to music. What a life. I don't have to spend all my time hunting for it anymore. Bands and PRs send me all the music I get time to listen to, because I listen to everything I get sent, how rude would it be not to? Once in a blue moon you get an email from a band just saying "hey we'd really just like your opinion" and once in an even bluer moon, the song is actually really fucking good so you get to make it single of the week and rave about it. This is one of those blue moons.

Brains starts like Blondie and soon becomes something different. Part Pixies noise-fest, part 80s synth sunset. It's a controlled adrenaline rush. A wind tunnel not a hurricane if you know what I mean? That isn't a criticism. It's a testament to their skill. I can't decide if it sounds like something else, I hate being preoccupied with that kind of thing, I do know that I fucking love this song. It makes me want to rip out my shitty broken spine and flop around on a dance floor having fun. They are from Norwich, this is their first demo, and I know nothing about them apart from that and this song. Which is enough for now, but I will need more. - The 405

"Mega Emotion BRAINS"

‘BRAINS’ is a beautiful nod to the 1980s with a heavy, New Order-style dance beat, to make you sit up and take notice immediately. The plummeting and emotionally-hitting note changes are perfect for this nostalgic endeavour, and the dancing whips of the guitar pulls the track straight into the 21st century; coexisting comfortably with the electro-throbs.

‘BRAINS’ crashes into chaotic intermissions midst the pop-haven; something similar to a Muse-like euphoria mixed with a Pixies emotional-discharge. The captivating female vocals effortlessly harmonise in a cool nod to Debbie Harry/ Kate Bush, creating a true pleasure for the senses that charms you into submission.

Mega Emotion really have created a wonderful track here, something that gives me hope for the year ahead in music. A lot of bands can reproduce an ‘old’ sound, but it takes more to make it compatible and relevant for modern taste buds; without simply repeating history. Warning: ‘BRAINS’ is highly addictive and may cause permanent shaking of the head or waist.

"Mega Emotion - City In Shapes"

When we first featured Mega Emotion last year, we talked about how they would blow your pre-conceptions about sleepy Norwich completely out of the water. Now, having been tipped for big things not only by us but by the likes of John Kennedy (and he knows things he does) they are back to melt your mind once more with another stormingly frenetic piece of electronic chaos-pop.

Taken from their forthcoming debut EP Fake Feelings, “City In Shapes” is like eating popping candy that’s been made with dynamite rather than pressurised and gassified carbon dioxide (free science lesson for you there). It’s a blue light emergency of a track, whooping and blaring all over your face as it speeds along the streets, forcing other more sedate songs to the side of the road as it screams past. A heart mimicking kick drum arrests into tachycardic synths and guitars race with urgent vocals convulsing with energy and power. Doom laden riffs set in as the track whips to its destination, then harmonious vocals of peace give brief respite until its final violent silence.

It’s a death defying ride to salvation, or otherwise. Regardless, it’s another fantastic offering from a fast rising Norwich band coming to take over the world - Alphabet Bands
