"Local CD Review"

Still looking for a fresh female voice who didn’t get her start on “American Idol”? Chicago-bred Meg Allison may have your answer. Her debut disc, Missing Piece, is full of exactly the sort of low-key, heartfelt, story-telling tracks you’d expect from an inspired singer-songwriter who waits tables by day and plays her heart out in small bars by night. Allison is less power pop than Kelly Clarkson and less country than Carrie Underwood, settling comfortably somewhere between. Maybe her only missing piece is a breakout single. (www.megallison.com)

"Missing Piece, Album Review"

"Smooth, easy, melodic with a twist of twang, Meg Allison's Missing Piece is a nice compliment to a rainy Sunday afternoon. Sit by a fireplace, get cozy, pour a glass of wine, and simply feel good listening to this up and coming star. For the lover of Norah Jones, Feels Like Home or Sheryl Crow, Tuesday Night Music Club, Missing Piece is a definite addition to the collection."

"Newest Rising Star Award"

MEG ALLISON - NEWEST RISING STAR 2008

In the past couple of years, Meg Allison has turned into an exciting new addition to the campus market. With her appearance and top 10 finish on Season 5 of USA's popular "American Idol"- like television show, "Nashville Star", she launched herself into the public eye. Its little wonder then, that Meg has taken the award for Newest Rising Star of 2008 in Campus Activities® Magazine's Reader's Choice Awards.

"I started playing music as a child. While a lot of the other kids were doing sports I was writing songs when I was really young. Eventually I went off to college and got an acoustic guitar, because I had originally trained on piano. I taught myself to play and started writing some more cohesive songs. Eventually I realized this was what I wanted to do, so when I graduated I moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming (a big tourist town) and started playing in bars."

Playing mostly cover songs in the beginning, Meg played more and more original tunes as she progressed. She eventually moved back to her hometown of Chicago with hopes of bigger and better opportunities. "I started playing around the city and heard of NACA from the producer of my first album. "I submitted on my own and ended up landing all these showcases. It kind of just all fell together."

Meg nearly scoffs at the notion of being able to categorize herself as a musician. "I grew up primarily listening to pop music and then when I started playing guitar I began to write songs; so my style took on sort of a narrative form. This naturally led me to country music and my voice sounds much more country than anything else. Everyone in Chicago who heard me always told me 'You know you should really move to Nashville. You would fit right in there.' When I finally went, I was like 'Oh, yeah! This is exactly where I should be.'

"I think I'm still kind of making that transition into country music. It is a craft that you have to learn, study and embrace because the songwriting is so much different and unique from any other genre. Now I really just consider myself to be sort of country/pop acoustic singer/songwriter (laughs). I know that is five different things, but that is as close as I can get. I am the country singer for those people who don't listen to country; I hear that a lot."

Congratulations to Meg Allison for her win in the category of Newest Rising Star of 2008 in our Reader's Choice Awards.

"Best Song of the Month!"

Meg Allison’s “Old Soul” Named May “Best Song Of The Month”
By Dale Kawashima

Meg Allison, a talented, young pop/rock singer/songwriter based in Chicago, IL, has won the SongwriterUniverse “Best Song Of The Month” Contest for May, for her song “Old Soul.” This song is included on her 12-song CD, Missing Piece, which she released independently in November 2005.

“Old Soul” is a thoughtfully-written, modern pop/rock cut, which uniquely combines an organic, soul/blues style with a contemporary rock edge. The lyric is sung from the perspective of a young artist who is mature beyond her years, due to events and experiences in her life. The recording was skillfully produced by Chris Keup of Charlottesville, VA, who is known for working with prominent singer/songwriters Jason Mraz and Jonathan Rice.

Allison grew up in Evanston, IL (a suburb of Chicago), and she got into music at a young age. She began playing piano at age 6, and later on she learned to play guitar. Allison started to write songs when she was 16, and she was influenced by acclaimed acoustic/folk artists such as the Indigo Girls and Patty Griffin. Following high school, she attended the University of Indiana, then transferred to the University of Miami of Ohio, where she graduated with a B.A. in Mass Communications.

After college, Allison began focusing on her songwriting and her artist career, and she steadily performed live gigs. She released her first CD called Just Getting My Feet Wet in 2003, which was a compilation of her recordings to date. Then she contacted producer Chris Keup, who invited her to work with him at his studio in Charlottesville. Allison subsequently recorded her full Missing Piece CD with Keup, and he ended up co-writing six of the songs with her for the album.

Allison did write “Old Soul” by herself, and she explained what the song was about. “’Old Soul’ was inspired by older sister, Emily, who is disabled (with brain damage). She’s been a huge inspiration my whole life. Growing up with my sister, I had to grow up faster than I normally would have. It forced me to mature faster, but in a positive way. It also made me realize that I’m on earth to do my music – there’s no reason not to pursue my dreams.”

Now with the release of her Missing Piece CD, Allison is promoting the album aggressively. She has secured internet radio play for the album, and she has been performing gigs in Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles. She also played this March at the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) in Austin, TX. Allison will be performing at other festivals this summer, and she also hopes to land a music publishing deal.
