Between You & The Golden Sun
Meg Johnson Band
Fluke Records, 2004
It's uplifting music like this that makes me wish Ear Whacks was multi-media. If it were, you would see the big, wide grin on my jowly mug and know how I feel about the music instead of having to wade through the punditbabble I'm about to spew.
Those looking for proof positive that spring is just around the corner need only listen to the bluegrass clarity of the effervescent "Wide River," wherein Johnson, her voice as clear and true as that first warm breeze, stares at the daisies on her window sill, imagining herself running through open fields with her partner. Heartfelt and rootsy folk rock rules the day, as "Could It Be," "Sailboat," "Start Over," and the exquisite "Deer" ably display. Dynamic and textured ensemble playing by husband Kyle Esposito, Steve Mayone, Kevin Maul, Doug Marcus, Eric Parker, and Bob Resnick shines throughout, most impressively on the Allman-ish drive of "One More Time."
Because there is such an abundance of fine music emanating from our glorious valley, I regretfully don't get to hear it all. But I will say without hesitation, this is some of the finest talent around.

"Americana UK reviews June 2005"

Meg Johnson Band “Between You and the Golden Sun” (Fluke 2005) Sounding like a folkie Bonnie Raitt fronting a kickass bluegrass band, ‘Wide River’ opens this immediately accessible, multifaceted country rock record. Trying on a variety of genres can often sound calculated and unconvincing but this record feels credible whatever the mood; from the weepy Raitt-ish ballads like ‘For This World’ to the poppier Edie Brickell-ish stuff like ‘Could it Be’ . The ‘Beast of Burden’ groove of ‘Goodnight’ and the Buckner-ish twang of ‘Sailboat’ also sound pretty good, ably voiced by Johnson’s partner and co-writer Kyle Esposito. Though not quite to Richard and Linda’s standards, the writing here is far beyond being merely respectable and, especially for a debut, the band sounds more seasoned and professional than a lot of major label players. www.megjohnsonband.com RC

Bio

The Meg Johnson Band released its first full-length CD, “Between You and the Golden Sun”, on Fluke Records, LLC in 2004. Featuring the brilliant performances of Stephen Mayone (Chris Delmhorst) on Electric Guitar and Mandolin, Kevin Maul (Burns sisters, Robin and Linda Williams) on Steel Guitar and Dobro, Doug Marcus (Harmony Grits) on Upright Bass, Eric Parker (Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker) on Drums and Bob Resnick (Folding Sky) on Percussion,
“Between You and the Golden Sun” boasts a fresh approach to music rooted in the American folk-rock tradition. The song “One More Time” was featured on WMVY Martha’s Vineyard’s “Fresh Produce” sampler. At least 7 out of the 11 songs on the disc have been in rotation on stations in the northeast as well as many internet streams.
The MJB just recorded an EP entitled "Bits And Pieces" with renowned producer/engineer Bobby Eichorn (Richard Thompson, Carly Simon) in early 2007 and is planning on another full-length release by the end of the year.
You may have heard Meg’s singing on The Breakfast’s “Deuce” or more recently on Tom Pacheco’s latest release, “Rebel Spring” – produced by Jim Weider of The Band. While living in New Haven and New York City in the mid 90’s, She and partner Kyle Esposito co-fronted Fourth House, Releasing the CD “The Flood” and sharing stages with the likes of Government Mule and God Street Wine.
The Meg Johnson Band began taking shape after relocating to Woodstock and writing songs while playing in a small acoustic format. They released their first EP “Midwest” in 2000. With the release of the “Jones” EP in early 2003, the band began performing shows featuring songs co-written by Meg and Kyle.
