"Meg Murray & Angie Miller Ready to Play"

Wednesday, October 15, 2003

Annapolis has a bustling music community all its own and, members of this self-contained group do not venture onto neighboring stages as often as they might.
On Oct. 24 two Annapolis singers (and songwriters) Meg Murray and Angie Miller bring their three-part show to the cozy college town emporium, Andy's in Chestertown.
Backed by a full band (Larry Melton on bass; Ryan Diehl on drums, and an unnamed guest guitarist), Murray starts the evening with a solo set of her urban contemporary tunes.

A slender blonde with a voice that just keeps getting better, Murray was approached by producer Timbaland (Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake's new solo release "Justified") a couple of years ago.
She spent time in Manhattan recording with him but the project was shelved. "The deal fell through mainly [due to] timing. I was 30 going up against 18 year olds," says Murray. "I was with the right people, at the right place, at the very wrong time."
The experience did open doors into the world of hip-hop, as well as give Murray insight into the music business and the studio process, which she says was "like going to graduate school."
Once her contract with Timbaland expired and she regained control of her songs, Murray hunkered down in Annapolis with Todd Kreuzburg to produce her fourth album, "Ready," which she released in November 2002 on her own label, Girl Island Productions. The album's title track and "A Lover's Lament" - what Murray describes as the first happy love song she's ever written. "It's a wish" she says - can be heard on her MP3 page.
The second set at Andy's will have Miller fronting the band. A wonderful songwriter whose 2003 release "Play" was recorded live at Sampsons Lounge in Annapolis (with Murray heard on background vocals), Miller established herself through several songwriters series. Her latest takes place every Thursday in November at Chez Lafitte in Easton, just down the street from the historic Avalon Theatre.

Miller's first album, "Ricochet" released by the Big Mo label in 1996, included a cameo from the guitarist Danny Gatton and leaned toward poetic lyrics intertwined with pop rhythms. Her second album was "White Space," a lean acoustic effort Miller describes as "sparse and melancholy reflecting that time in my life." Her latest, "Play," has a fuller and buoyant sound. "At this point I'm really enjoying what I do," says Miller. "I get to work for myself, make music and work with talented people I respect. I feel blessed to be able to do that and that's really what it's about for me now."

Miller's "Swim to Me" and "What's Wrong With Your Mind" - the latter based on a short story written by her father -- can be heard on her MP3 page.

Murray and Miller take on the evening's third set at Andy's together. What comes clear during their duet is that nothing can replace experience and talent when it comes to knowing how to capture an audience.

Bio

Endearing, talented and funny, Angie Miller and Meg Murray both obviously enjoy playing together. While Angie expertly plays her Taylor acoustic guitar, Meg adds a groove with effective percussion as their beautiful voices and harmonies blend together perfectly. This duo can break your heart with a beautiful love song and kick your butt like the great girl groups of the 60's with a dash of sass.

Meg & Angie have been performing their original songs together in venues from Washington DC to New York City for a decade. Both Angie and Meg showcase each of their prolific songwriting and their colorful musical influences during their set. Having put out 10 CD's between them, Meg & Angie's original songs range in style from R&B, jazz and soul, country and folk, to rock n roll & the blues.

As the spirit of the performance moves them, original material created by these two sirens can quickly take a back seat as the long-time pals swing fearlessly through quirky covers of their favorite songs from everybody from The B52's, Cake, or Feist, to the The Knack, Jimi Hendrix or Chaka Khan. What becomes clear during their duet is that nothing can replace the wonderful experience and joy that comes from having a little help from your friends.

Angie Miller is an award winning singer/songwriter who performs her original music at local clubs, coffeehouses, festivals, and colleges throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Angie has worked with GRAMMY winning producers such as John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews) and GRAMMY nominated engineer Bill Plummer (Cee-Cee Wynans). Her debut CD, Ricochet, was released by Big Mo Records in 1996, featuring guitar legend Danny Gatton. She has since produced two independent releases- White Space (2001) a beautiful all-acoustic recording with sparse arrangements and introspective lyrics that is organic and moving. Play (2003) is an exceptional live recording featuring a top-notch full band that showcases Angie's great songwriting- smart lyrics, beautiful melodies and strong pop hooks. She is currently in the studio producing her next CD due in late 2008. Angie Miller is sponsored by Taylor Guitars.

Meg Murray is formerly the lead singer of the Mid-Atlantic R&B/funk band NON-FICTION and the SAW Award winning acoustic duo AUGUST WEST. The WAMMIE (Washington Area Music Awards) nominated singer-songwriter has worked with GRAMMY winning producers Timbaland ( Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani)) and John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz), sung with Eva Cassidy, and has appeared on numerous national (Paul Reed Smith and The Dragons) and regional CD's as a backup singer. Meg has produced and released her solo pop/ R&B CD Ready (2002) and a holiday jazz CD I'll Be Home for Christmas (2005) on her own Girl Island Productions label, which continues to reach audiences worldwide through iTunes and internet sales. She is hard at work on a new pop/R&B CD that will drop later next year.
