THE SOUND
Melanie Atma combines melodic line with jazz inflection, classical lyricism and a folk singer’s conversational style. Her warm, velvet tone is fluid, expressing a colour reflective of her exotic heritage. Her original songs are delivered with a vocal agility that is matched by her flute playing. The groove masterfully laid down by the band featuring acoustic guitar, double bass and drums, contrasts the more intimate moments, solo at the piano. “Her style is effortless and uplifting"
THE SINGER
Studying classical instrumental music from an early age, Melanie developed a stand out lyric colloratura which took her along the expected path, yet her musical taste was wired to a different sound. Whilst singing with a major opera chorus, musical theatre and an a'capella quartet, for which she arranged and directed, Melanie developed her craft performing in the jazz/pop scene and began writing her own songs. In 1992 she travelled to Europe and immediately began working as a jazz and contemporary singer, forming a number of combos in Italy before landing a record deal launching her career as a songwriter and recording artist.
THE EP
With her self-titled acoustic EP Melanie Atma re-emerges as an independent artist rich with diverse musical experience. The collaboration for her current project began in late 2007 with the completion of two new songs, ‘My Own Way’ and ‘See’. They bookend the EP comprising a total of six songs from her extensive song folio, which speak of self-determination, courage, compassion, spiritual connectedness, hope for our planet and finding inner wisdom. It’s a positive vibe from an artist with vision.
OTHER PROJECTS
Melanie Atma is currently collaborating with writer Anthony James on an album dedicated to current socio-environmental awareness. She works in the broader community as a musician, teacher and conducts specialist workshops in confidence, performance and songwriting.
