"Tourism Association Selects the Songs of Manitoulin"

"Congratuations to everyone who submitted a song in our contest," announced Sheila Bowes. "With the wide range of songs and talent it was difficult to select one winner, so the MTA (Manitoulin Tourism Association) decided to declare two winners. Ed Jackson's Manitoulin Island and Emily Cortolezzis's The Island. We'll be using them in Manitoulin's upcoming campaigns." Eager to talk to the winners, I phoned, Emily was thrilled. "I read about the contest and I kept trying to write but nothing was coming to me. One morning I woke up and the song was in my head. That's how it is. I went down to the first piano and played and wrote it down. I went to another piano to hear the sound. Emily, a grade 11 student attends Marymount Academy in Sudbury. She'd love to attend University of Toronto to study opera and piano. In the summer she's a hard working waitress on Manitoulin at Abby's restaurant. "This kid has music in her soul," her charming mother, Donna told me. "She can play for hours. I have to tell her to go do her homework." - Sudbury Star Newspaper- Bonnie Kogos Window Seat Column

Bio

Eighteen year old singer songwriter M.E. Lexis believes everyone has a song, a story to tell. She began performing at a young age, and then grew a passion for songwriting through her love for the piano. After co-winning the 2010 Manitoulin Song Contest with her piece titled "The Island", M.E. was inspired to continue writing and sharing her music with as many people as she could. She has played at the Manitoulin Country Fest, Crystal Shawanda's Homecoming Concert, the Providence Bay Fair and many other venues in the Sudbury and Manitoulin area. Her songs are inspired by the people she meets, the stories they have to tell, and on her own life experiences. M.E. will be performing in the summer of 2012 at the New Music Fest in Sudbury, the Bell Park Summer Concert Series, the National Conference of Catholic School Boards, (for whom she wrote their theme song) and many other private functions.
